There are times when a Portuguese word resembles the equivalent English word closely, and there are times when it only looks like it does, which is called a false friend.
This title is such a false friend — yet so much like a play on words — that we could call it a frenemy. My English brain parses gripe (pronounced “greep”) as in to gripe or complain but it actually means flu, and reads constipação as constipation when it actually mean the common cold. False friends, indeed!

Yesterday I didn’t volunteer, I was in the grips of gripe and today I’m deep in a constipação. It all sounds terrible, doesn’t it?
But thankfully it’s not pneumonia.
