With less than a month until Royal Ascot 2015, there’s a notable excitement for those who are planning to attend. Royal Ascot is the most valuable race meeting in Britain, and attracts some of the finest racehorses in the world, competing for more £5.5 million of prize money.
Set over five days, the event has long been seen as one of the biggest spectacles of style and fashion in the world. Nearly 300,000 people are expected to attend Royal Ascot, which begins on the 16th of June, and goes until the 20th.
Here are some tips if you’re planning to attend Royal Ascot 2015:
Dress Well:
Formal daywear is required in the Royal Enclosure, which is invitation only. However Ascot released a strict dress code 2012 to prevent the influx of more casual wear, and you’ll want to ensure you meet regulations so that you’re not turned away.
Ladies dresses and skirts should fall just above the knee or a little longer, and while trouser suits are permitted, they should be full length, and matching in both color and material. Fascinators are not allowed, and women are expected to wear a hat, or a headpiece which has a base of 10cm or more. Strapless, halter neck, and spaghetti strap dresses and tops are not allowed, and shorts are also not permitted.
Men should wear either gray or black morning dress, or a full suit with a shirt and a tie. Branded and promotional clothes are banned, as are fancy dress and novelty items.
Eat Before you Arrive
The races are always a long day, and with such a large amount of alcohol available, it’s best to ensure you have a decent breakfast or brunch before you arrive, so that you can soak up the alcohol and ensure you don’t embarrass yourself.
There are also plenty of places to eat and drink available so you can meet with friends between races for lunch, afternoon tea, or a few drinks.
Don’t drive
Parking is expensive, so if possible, see if you can get a coach or taxi to the racecourse. That way everyone can have a few drinks, with no one needing to take responsibility for driving.
Do your research
While it can be fun to choose the horse with the most interesting name, a little bit of research can be the difference between leaving the races as a winner or a loser. If you’re planning to leave with full pockets, spend the few weeks leading up to the races to figure out which horse you’d like to bed on, which will also help with excitement in the lead up to the races.
