Kevin Mayer, the Disney executive who led the development and launch of Disney Plus, will become TikTok CEO from June 1, announced ByteDance, the parent company of the social network.

According to a press release released on May 18, Mayer will report directly to ByteDance Inc. founder and CEO Yiming Zhang, and will also oversee corporate development and the areas of sales, marketing, public affairs, security, moderation and legal.

“Like everyone else, I have been impressed to see the company [TikTok] build something incredibly rare, a creative and positive global online community, and I am excited to help lead the next phase of ByteDance as the company continues to expand its product offering in all regions of the world, “Mayer said in a press release. The former Disney executive took the opportunity to thank the Disney team, especially Bob Iger, “for his visionary leadership and guidance for many years,” and also thanked Bob Chapek.

The Chinese company, ByteDance, announced in January 2020 that it was looking for a new CEO for TikTok, a short video application that reached 2 billion downloads despite being identified as a national security risk by authorities in the United States.

In 2020, TikTok opened a new office in Culver City, Los Angeles, because according to Vanessa Pampas, the general manager of TikTok, although the company is global, “having a permanent office in LA speaks of our commitment to the United States market. “
