Thursday’s Comic Con Schedule: Book & Author Spotlight

By Appraisingpages @appraisjngpages

Comic-Con-2012-Movie-PreviewSo all you have to do is check out the Twitter feed lately to see that I’m already going crazy over the 2013 San Diego Comic Con Schedule!  I’m adding panels to my schedule left and right, you can view my schedule here.  Comic Con is releasing each day’s schedule two weeks before the event, so today Thursday’s was released, tomorrow Friday’s will be released, etc.  For all of my fellow bookworms who are also attending SDCC 2013  here is a summary of some of Thursday’s panels and events especially for bibliophiles:

Paranormal Passion Panel:

10:30am – 11:30am

Authors discuss the inclusion of romantic elements in their action-packed novels. Protagonists must battle the forces of evil while trying to keep the world (and often their lovers) safe from destruction. Maryelizabeth Hart of Mysterious Galaxy leads a discussion with Comic-Con special guest Christine Feehan (The Dark Series), Claudia Gray (Spellcaster), Aprilynne Pike (Earthbound), Lauren Kate (The Fallen Novels), Kendare Blake (Antigoddess), and Magnus Flyte (City of Dark Magic).

We’ve read and reviewed Kendare Blake’s Anna Dressed in Blood here and here, and Girl of Nightmares here, but I’ve never met her!  Usually after each panel they do a signing and I hope I get my copies of her books signed.  We featured Lauren Kate last year for our New Summer Releases post and if she’ll be there promoting her Fallen series.

I haven’t read the other authors yet but just this morning I jumped onto my library’s website and downloaded Spellcaster by Claudia Gray (even though it’s a holiday! Fantastic!) and put some of Aprilynne Pike’s books on hold for me to pick up tomorrow.

Ode to Nerds

1:45pm – 2:45pm

Everyone knows that published science fiction authors reign on the Geek Heirarchy charts, because the Internet tells us so! Join panelists as the genre’s top names in publishing celebrate all things geeky and nerdy, with Charlie Jane Anders of io9.com. Geek out with Cory Doctorow (The Rapture of the Nerds),Chuck Palahniuk (Doomed), Patrick Rothfuss (The Name of the Wind), Austin Grossman (You), D. C. Pierson (Crap Kingdom), and Robyn Schneider (The Beginning of Everything).

I really love Charlie Jane Anders, she’s from io9.com and on of one of my favorite panels, Science Fiction That Will Change Your Life.  What really catches my eye on this panel is the fabulous Chuck Palahniuk.  I just realized that even though I’ve read a few of his books I’ve never featured them here!  Maybe that will have to change…  I did read a new book simply because he gave it a great review, The Stud Book by Monica Drake.  I looked up some of the other authors and a few of them have books that are being published later this summer.  I’ve added Robyn Schneider’s book The Beginning of Everything to my to-read list, perhaps there will be some ARCs available!

Enders Game and Divergent Hall H

3:50pm – 4:50pm

Summit Entertainment presents a special sneak peek at the highly anticipated film adaptation of the beloved, award-winning novel Enders Game. This is a must-see for fans, who will be shown all-new, exclusive footage and treated to a Q&A with stars Harrison FordAsa ButterfieldHailee Steinfeld, andAbigail Breslin, along with producer Roberto Orci (Star Trek Into Darkness) and director Gavin Hood(X-Men Origins: Wolverine). The panel will also feature the first footage ever seen of the futuristic thriller based on the #1 New York Times best-selling novel, Divergent. Cast and filmmakers will complete a Q&A sharing details of the project’s transition from book to film. Panelists will include novelist Veronica Roth, director Neil Burger, and cast members Shailene WoodleyTheo JamesMiles TellerMaggie Q,Ansel ElgortMekhi PhiferBen LambBen Lloyd-Hughes and Christian Madsen.

Why and how Justine and I haven’t read Ender’s Game yet is a mystery.  We’ve only heard amazing things about it and I guess we’ve just never taken it from our “to-read” to “currently-reading” lists.  But, you know we love Divergent!  Our review of its sequel, Insurgent, was our first blog entry.  And Justine found a great guide to showing of your love for Divergent… using your nails, of all things!

This panel is going to be CRAZY because it’s in Hall H, the biggest room, and means that I’ll probably have to wait in line all day to even think about getting into it.  I’m not going to count on getting into this one, but if I do, I will be sure to share all the movie news with everyone!

The Scoop at Simon and Schuster

7:00pm – 8:00pm

Get the inside word on Simon and Schuster’s upcoming books and the chance to win exclusive prizes!Lucille Rettino (vice president, director of marketing), Carolyn Swerdloff (marketing manager), Chrissy Noh (associate marketing director), Mara Anastas (vice president, deputy publisher), and Anna McKean(Associate Publicity Director) will give you the scoop on upcoming books from exciting authors, including Cassandra Clare, Orson Scott Card, Tony DiTerlizzi, and Brandon Mull. Hear what is going on with S and S’s hot properties and get a chance to win exclusive giveaways. All attendees will receive a limited edition T-shirt for the upcoming The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones movie.

Simon and Schuster is one of my favorite publishers to work with.  They are great to bloggers and have really caught on to creating buzz using social media and blogging outlets.  Even though specific authors may not be at this panel, they usually give away a lot of books which I can return to our lovely readers!

Are you excited about Thursday’s schedule?  If you’re coming to Comic Con, find my schedule (link above), add me as a friend, and we’ll share and compare schedules!  I am counting down the days!
