A group of officers from the Gampola Excise Unit have arrested three persons with 30 electronic cigarettes, who are said to have been promoting and selling e-cigarettes, which are not permitted for sale in the country, through Facebook.
According to the Excise Department, these persons were arrested in Katugastota, Madawala and Kandy. Excise officers have been able to conduct investigations and arrest the relevant persons through the advertisements published on Facebook saying that electronic cigarettes are available for sale.
The officers who conducted the raid said that the three arrested persons had 9, 16 and 5 electronic cigarettes respectively. Investigations have revealed that they were selling these cigarettes for Rs.7,500 each.
The Excise Department says that it is not allowed to import e-cigarettes into Sri Lanka and some people bring these cigarettes to Sri Lanka by concealing them among other goods when they come from foreign countries.
The Magistrate has imposed a fine of Rs.4,000 on each of the three persons who were brought before the Kandy Court on charges of selling and offering electronic cigarettes for sale.
