The Anuradhapura Division Criminal Investigation Division said that three persons, including a monk and a member attached to the cadet corps, were arrested while trying to sell a stock of gold coloured   coins with animal images said to have been unearthed from an archaeological site for Rs.17.6 million to a millionaire businessman in the Colombo area.

The police had arrested a 62-year-old monk, a 43-year-old man who is a Cadet Corps member and a 33-year-old man who is a resident of Kirikkulama, Anuradhapura.

Police said they have taken 52 gold coins with animal images and a bottle of ‘mercury’ which the suspects had brought to check the gold coins.

The suspects will be presented in court. A court order is to be sought to obtain an archaeological report on whether the seized items have any archaeological value.
