Threads Launches New UX Features Amidst Controversies

Posted on the 19 July 2023 by Jitender Sharma

Meta’s microblogging platform releases a new update. It has added a Follows Tab, and a  translation button along with some other smaller enhancements. As the user-base expands exponentially, Threads seems to be keen on nailing the UX.

Cameron Roth, the developer behind Threads, shared the details of the new features in a recent post. The Follows Tab can be found on the activity feed rather than the Threads Home-feed. It makes it convenient for users to keep track of individuals who have followed them on Threads. This will be beneficial for users trying to communicate with their followers more effectively.

There had been some criticism about the absence of a followed-only feed on Threads. The app showed posts from followed and unfollowed accounts in the same feed. Adam Moresi, the head of Instagram is taking the possibility of a separate feed for the posts by followed accounts into consideration.

The integration of translation capability is very interesting considering the global appeal of the app. The translation button can be found at the bottom right corner of a post. Users are now able to translate their content into their preferred language. Threads is using the same AI-powered translation technology used in Instagram. This feature enhances accessibility and promotes inclusivity.

Threads amassed more than 100 million sign-ups within the first 5 days of its launch, breaking records set by TikTok and ChatGPT. There is, however, some controversy around Threads. Elon Musk accused Meta of “cheating” and even mentioned potential legal action. The fact that users might not be able to uninstall Threads without losing their Instagram data is also quite problematic. On top of that the kind of data Threads asks users to share is hard to explain. The EU has still not lifted the ban from Threads and the company is barring users from the EU from using the app using a VPN.
