This Weeks Anniversaries

Posted on the 17 October 2014 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

This is the 25th Anniversary of Look Who’s Talking, which debuted at the top in 1989 with 12.1 million, eventually grossing 140 million domestically, and 296 million worldwide. Look Who’s Talking was the 4th highest grossing film of 1989, and adjusted for inflation, would be John Travolta’s third highest grossing film of all time. Critics weren’t huge fans, as the film has a 58% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences agreed, with a 5.8 on IMDB.

It’s also the 25th Anniversary of The Fabulous Baker Boys, which opened to only 3.3M on its way to 15.8M domestic. It’s probably better known as being a critical hit, with a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 6.8 on IMDB. Jeff Bridges, Beau Bridges, and Michelle Pfeiffer starred. Pfeiffer was actually nominated for an Oscar for her role in this film (the film received three more nominations), and won a Golden Globe.

Pulp Fiction celebrates its 20th Anniversary. It had an unimpressive opening weekend of 9.3M (enough for first place), but went on to gross 107M domestic and 213M worldwide. Pulp Fiction has a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 9.0 on IMDB, where it is ranked 5th on IMDB’s Top 250 films of all time. It was nominated for 7 Academy Awards, winning one for Quentin Tarantino’s screenplay. It was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor (John Travolta), Best Supporting Actor (Samuel L Jackson), and Best Supporting Actress (Uma Thurman), as well as Tarantino for Director.

It’s also the 20th Anniversary of Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, which was a failed attempt at rebooting the Nightmare On Elm Street series. The film made only 18M domestically. Also, Little Giants turns 20 this week, as well as the groundbreaking documentary Hoop Dreams.

Hitting its 15th Anniversary this week is Fight Club, the instant David Fincher classic, featuring Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter. Fight Club opened at #1 with 11M, eventually grossing 37M domestically and 100M worldwide. Fight Club has an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, but an 8.9 on IMDB, which makes it ranked 10th on IMDB’s Top 250 films of All Time list. Fight Club also received an Oscar nomination for Best Sound Effects Editing.

This is the 10th Anniversary of Team America: World Police, the controversial puppet comedy from Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Team America opened in 3rd place with 12.1M, eventually making 32M domestic and 50M worldwide. It has a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 7.2 on IMDB.

This is the 5th Anniversary of Where The Wild Things Are, which opened to #1 in 2009 with 32.6M. It eventually grossed 77M domestic and 100M worldwide. It has a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 6.8 on IMDB. It received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Score
