This Weekends Anniversaries In Film

This weekend is the 30th anniversary of Red Dawn, starring the late Patrick Swayze, along with C. Thomas Howell, Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson, and Jennifer Grey. It opened in #1 with 8.2 million, eventually grossing 38M. It was the 20th top grossing film of 1984. It has an OK 56% on rotten tomatoes, and a 6.3 on IMDB.

It’s the 25th anniversary of The Abyss, which opened to 9.3M in 1989 for a second place finish. James Cameron directed, and it eventually got to 54M domestic and 90M worldwide. It was the 24th highest grossing film of the year. It won the Oscar for visual effects, and was nominated for cinematography, art direction, and sound. It has a 7.1 on IMDB, and 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.

It’s the 20th Anniversary of Clear And Present Danger, which opened to 20.3 million for a first place finish. The Harrison Ford starrer was a wide release back then, and only made it to 2,378 screens, showing you how many screens we’ve added in the past 20 years. Audiences thought it was OK, and it has a 6.9 on IMDB. Critics appreciated it more at 82%. IMDB was nominated for two Oscars. It made 122.1M at the US box office, and 215.8M worldwide. It was the 7th highest grossing film of 1994, and adjusted for inflation, would be the 10th highest grossing film of Harrison Ford’s long career.

It’s also the 20th anniversary of The Little Rascals. The TV adaptation made 10M in its opening weekend, and went on to get 52M domestically. It was the 22nd highest grossing film of 1994. Audiences thought it was OK, with a 6.2 on IMDB, and critics called it a thud with 27% on Rotten Tomatoes.

This is the 15th anniversary of The Sixth Sense, which got a ton of buzz. It opened to 26.6M and stayed at #1 for six weeks. Critics adored it with an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 8.2 on IMDB. It’s still remembered fondly today, for the moment we all remembered when Haley Joel Osment saw dead people. It ended up with a domestic gross of 293.5M, for the 2nd highest grossing film of 1999. It currently is the 50th highest grossing film of all time, 64th worldwide. It made 672M worldwide, and is Bruce Willis’s highest grossing film worldwide. Domestically, it is his highest grossing adjusted gross film. It was nominated for 6 Oscars, including Best Supporting Actor for Haley Joel Osment, and Best Supporting Actress for Toni Collette, as well as Best Picture and Best Director for M Night Shyamalan. It currently sits at #161 on IMDB’s Top 250 films of all time.

This is also the 15th anniversary of The Thomas Crown Affair, the remake starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. It opened in 4th place with 20.8M, on its way to 69.3M domestic. It ended with a worldwide total of 124.3M. Critics gave it a 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, while IMDB has it at 6.8.

This is the 15th anniversary of Mystery Men, starring Ben Stiller. It’s become more of a cult classic, after flopping at the box office at 29.7M. It has a 6.0 on IMDB, and a 60% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s also the 15th anniversary of the classic animated film The Iron Giant, which has grown to be beloved after being ignored at the box office. It opened to 8.7M on its way to 23.1M domestic. Iron Giant is at 7.9 on IMDB, and 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.

10 years ago, Collateral opened, directed by Michael Mann and starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx. It opened in 1st with a weekly gross of 36.3M, an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 7.6 on IMDB. It went on to make 101M domestically, and 217M worldwide. It was his 12th 100M film. It was Jamie Foxx’s first, and is his 4th highest grossing of all time (adjusted). Collateral was nominated for two Oscars, including one for Foxx’s performance.

This is the 5th anniversary of GI:Joe The Rise Of Cobra, which opened to 54.7M for a 1st place finish. It ended with 150M domestic, and 302M worldwide. It helped to launch Channing Tatum as a star, and it is his 3rd highest grossing film of all time. Audiences gave it a 5.8, and critics disliked it with a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes. Dennis Quaid co-starred and it is also his 3rd highest grossing film of all time, despite a much longer career than Tatum. The film spawned a sequel, and a third is in the works.

It is also the 5th anniversary of Julie and Julia, starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. It ended up with a 94M domestic take, and 129M worldwide. Audiences gave it a 7.0 on IMDB, with critics liking it a bit more at 75%. Meryl Streep received an Oscar nomination for her role.
