  • The Samsung Galaxy A51 reportedly shipped the most devices of any Android phone in the first half of 2020.
  • However, it was beaten to number one by the iPhone 11.
  • Apple and Xiaomi reportedly made up nine of the top ten phones.

Apple's iOS may only make up a fraction of the global smartphone market when compared to Android phones, but iPhones still sell by shipload. Now tracking company Omdia has unveiled the most shipped smartphones of the first half of 2020, with Apple's iPhone 11 being by far the number one device.

The analytics firm found that Apple shipped a gigantic 37.7 million iPhone 11 devices during this period. How important is that then? Well, the second-placed Samsung Galaxy A51 shipped 11.4 million units (over 26 million units fewer). Even so, according to the company, the Samsung device is the top-selling Android phone in the first half of 2020. But it was the only Samsung phone in the top 10. Check out the list below.

However, there were more iPhones in the top 10 when Omdia reported the 2020 iPhone SE (8.7 million), iPhone XR (eight million), iPhone 11 Pro Max (7.7 million), and iPhone 11 Pro (6.7 million) the fifth, sixth, seventh and tenth places. These are two more Apple models in the top 10 compared to a year ago.

Xiaomi also had four devices in the top 10, with the Redmi Note 8 (11 million) and Redmi Note 8 Pro (10.2 million) taking third and fourth places. The Redmi 8A (7.3 million) and the Redmi 8 (6.8 million) took eighth and ninth place. That's two devices more than a year ago when there were two phones in the top 10.

In both cases, Samsung is the biggest loser, as there were four devices on the list a year ago, this time only the Galaxy A51. That news comes as the company dropped the number one crown for Huawei in the second quarter of 2020, according to several tracking companies. This change is believed to be due to China's COVID-19 recovery, which coincides with the lockdown of Europe and the US. Huawei can rely on its main market China during this period.

It is also interesting that there are still no 5G phones in these top ten. We are still in the early days of 5G phones, but mid-range 5G devices are already available in various markets. That said, we definitely expect the next crop of iPhones to feature 5G and appear in the top 10.
