By Pamelascott

Orphaned young, H is sent to live with her doting aunt in London. H's life is a happy one until her lecherous cousin robs her of her innocence, and the plague takes away the city and the people she loves. H is cast out-friendless, pregnant and destitute-into the rapidly emptying streets of London under quarantine.

I thought this was a great book, very different from other historical fiction I've read. The title and the style and structure used to tell the story made it feel like I was reading a book about real events. H is a great character, so different from the typical heroine you find in historical fiction. She goes through some awful experiences yet remains strong, feisty and determined not to be defined by her experience. I couldn't help admire her. This is the author's debt and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next. I was completely immersed in H and her story. This is a terrific book.
