Auto shows hoped to go off into an unimportant sunset following two decades of lockdowns aren’t yet dead.

In the wake of the enthralling Munich auto show in the autumn, The New York International Auto Show is scheduled to open for the public on the evening of April 15 at Manhattan’s Javits Center and will run through April 24.

The design is more appealing than in previous years in light of the supply chain crisis, which has caused delays in delivery to dealers and markups of 100,000 over the manufacturer’s estimated retail value for high-end vehicles and SUVs.

The event will take place in New York. Automakers will show off new cars for sale that many narcissistic car-spotters only have read about in glossy magazines or watched on YouTube.

Many have placed orders for these new vehicles, yet to be seen or even resigned like the people who ordered General Motors’ Hummer EV to wait for years. The next week they’ll have the chance to stop the tires.

“Automobile shows are still very applicable in exactly the same way that dealerships are still relevant,” says Erin Kerrigan, founder, and director at Kerrigan Advisors, a consulting firm. “Customers still like to touch and feel a brand new car before they obtain it.”

Electrical Car Growth

Electric cars can be the spotlight’s main glare for the next week throughout New York.

A few of them may come from obscure companies like INDI EV and Electra Meccanica; however, Detroit’s pickups, with their heavyweight design, will get the top spot. Ford Motor’s F-150 Lightning, revealed via video feed an entire year ago, will be announced in the weeks leading up to its initial deliveries.

Buyers can look at the number of White Claws they might be capable of fitting into the back of the trunk. Or consider how they can connect the device to their home during the event of a blackout.

General Motors Inc, in turn, will show off its electric variant of the Chevrolet Silverado Electric, a device that was first revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. It’s due to launch in 2023, which means you can expect GM to make all the noise to draw interest from the electric truck crowd to slow the progress of Ford’s electric truck.

Nissan, in turn, is expected to promote its upcoming electric SUV called the Ariya. The humble, battery-powered hatchback, known as the Leaf, for time, the everyday Tesla, has been beaten out by its rivals.

The Ariya is Nissan’s chance to earn back some of its electric street reputations. The production issues have held up the car for months, and this week’s event will give Americans the chance to view the vehicle before it goes on its way to dealerships in autumn.

Kia EV6

Hyundai Motor Co. may be among the show’s many surprises. Hyundai Motor promises to reveal the new production vehicle, but it’s not going to tell the specifics.

The company plans to market 1.7 million vehicles powered by electric power by 2026. So the likelihood is that whatever’s on the covers can be powered with a large lithium-ion battery.

Hyundai will also showcase their Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5, recently launched electric models that are very rare to find on the roads. (Both vehicles are selling for hefty prices over the cost of the sticker).

BloombergNEF estimates that the world will have 20 million plug-in cars on the streets, a staggering increase from just 1 million electric vehicles in 2016.

In the second quarter of 2022, more than 100,000 EVs will travel globally every month, following BNEF estimates. This is one every three seconds.

“We are now transitioning from the halo EV cars to more mass-produced EVs, which anybody can afford,” says Jesse Toprak, the chief analyst of Autonomy, the EV subscription company.

Therefore, we will witness an influx of curious consumers eager to know what’s out there today. Even (for) consumers who have not been aware of the EV market in the future, it will become too difficult to avoid.”

Absence of Luxury

However, the number of news-worthy announcements made at trade shows waned long before lockdowns, particularly for the top brands. They realized years ago that removing the cover off of a new German utility vehicle, complete with fireworks along with Arnold Schwarzenegger in a crumbling Detroit theater or launching the brand’s latest Italian car in a luxurious private lounge generates more buzz than a conference room with carpet.

The trade show this week will not be awash in any new products from the top automakers. Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, Cadillac, Ferrari, Maserati, Porsche, Rolls-Royce, and Volvo will not unveil anything new.

Alfa Romeo will show a new Tonale hybrid SUV.

BMW will showcase its new X7 SUV and its i7 electric sedan, which follows its iX SUV, as well as the i4 sports coupe that will be revealed in the fall of 2017.

Mercedes-Benz has decided to skip the event, but it will unveil the all-new electric EQS model later on April 19. Lincoln chose to reveal its electric model on April 20 on April 20 in Hollywood, Calif.

Lamborghini is also expected to showcase a brand new model of the current Huracan supercar that is it’s called the Huracan Tecnica, both at its studio on the Manhattan’s High Line and the Javits Center. The blend of high-end and sociable access is ideal for the brand, which can boost its sales across the US nearly two times as much as in its second-largest marketplace, China.

“The US is our most important market, and if we look at the share we have inside the US, it’s clear New York is a place we have to be,” says Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann. “It’s a good combination.”
