There is No “Blow” in Blowjob

By Drcastellanos

Funny how things get their names. Take the blowjob for example. Even though it sounds like it might be a descriptive name, a blowjob does not really have any blowing involved. The name alone would throw off anyone who wasn’t familiar with the practice. The scientific or medical term for it is fellatio is actually more descriptive (I guess, if you know Latin). So how did the blowjob get its name, and what is involved in a blowjob?

Where in the word blowjob derived from?

There are several different thoughts as to how the blowjob got its name. One common idea is that the slang term for prostitute used to be “blowsy” and so to have the act performed by them would then be considered a blow-job. Another idea is that there was a Victorian slang term for the act called “below-job”, which then evolved into blowjob. Perhaps the most comical idea is that the term blowjob was actually used as a code to mean its opposite – to suck. However it came to be, most people will agree that it’s not very descriptive.  Then again, neither is “hummer.”

What is actually involved in a blowjob?

To give fellatio (the technical name for a blowjob) involves more than just having a man’s erection in your mouth. The entire mouth, lips, and tongue are used to stimulate the most sensitive areas of his penis. For most men, that would be the frenulum just below the head of the penis. Adding just the right amount of suction to the process and using a hand below the mouth on the base of his penis usually provides optimal stimulation to bring him pleasure and eventually, orgasm.

What about deep-throat?

Isn’t porn wonderful? (sarcasm) Thanks to porn – both in print and in movies – many people get the idea that the optimal blowjob involves sticking a man’s erect penis as far down their throat as possible. This may be very erotic for men who have fantasies about the size of their penis which are reinforced by this move. But it doesn’t offer the same stimulation because there is actually less contact on the most sensitive areas of his penis. In other words, it’s for show, not substance. You don’t have to practice deep-throating to learn how to give a pleasurable blowjob.
