Sophie Angel is the night lawyer. Once a week, she's the one who decides what the papers can and can't say.

#TheNightLawyer by @_AlexChurchill

During the day, she's a barrister. She struggles for justice in a system that's close to collapse, where she confronts the most dangerous aspects of humanity. Her life changes when a wealthy Russian offers her the biggest case of her career, a rape trial with a seemingly innocent client. But is someone manipulating Sophie from the shadows or is the danger much closer to home?

With her marriage under strain and haunted by nightmares from the past, Sophie must find the answer to these questions before it's too late. This is a story about betrayal, trust, guilt and innocence, played out from the courtrooms of London to the darkest corners of Soviet era Moscow.

I rarely read thrillers or crime fiction which has lawyers as the main characters. I don't know why, I just don't. The Night Lawyer is a cracking read. I may need to broaden my horizons. Sophie is a brilliant character and it's her that makes this such an enjoyable book. She's the kind of person you root for and it's easy to get behind. She struggles in the male-orientated world of barristers. She refuses to take on a sadistic legal aid client accused of a sexually violent crime because he admits his guilt. Her marriage is floundering because her husband is cheating and may be involved in illegal activities and she's the one threatened with losing her job due to the embarrassment this might bring the firm. She strong-willed, feisty and refuses to back down. The rape trial is disturbing to read at times because it felt like a very real situation and I have no doubt that was very close to what a rape trial would be like. There are also revelations about a tragedy from Sophie's past. I found this very engaging.
