In this surprising essay, international bestselling humour writer David Sedaris shares the rewards of a book tour and his devoted readers' worst-kept secrets.

Dismissed by a bored author at a book signing, a betrayed young man named David Sedaris made a vow. Someday, when it was his turn at the table, he'd connect with his readers. The experience has been even more revealing than he'd hoped.

In this hilarious and perceptive essay, the celebrated humourist reflects on the unusual patterns of forced socialization between author and audience, and the obligations and sometimes surprising returns of not-so-chance encounters with strangers: jokes, secrets, insights, and even charity.

[One of the things that most delighted me when I moved to Chicago in 1984 was the main branch of the public library, which was like a palace and was stocked with story collections I'd have never found back home in Raleigh]

I'd never heard of the author before but the essay was being promoted on Kindle and sounded like fun so I decided to give it a shot. I really enjoyed this. It was a lot of fun and very insightful. I could relate to the author's experiences of being dismissed by an author at a book signing. This has never happened to me but the experience recounted in the essay was very believable. This is a funny essay. I enjoyed the anecdotes about the author's humorous encounters with fans and some of the more poignant moments. This is well worth a read.
