The Wych Elm by Tana French

By Pamelascott

One night changes everything for Toby. He's always led a charmed life - until a brutal attack leaves him damaged and traumatised, unsure even of the person he used to be. He seeks refuge at his family's ancestral home, the Ivy House, filled with memories of wild-strawberry summers and teenage parties with his cousins.

But not long after Toby's arrival, a discovery is made: a skull, tucked neatly inside the old wych elm in the garden.

As detectives begin to close in, Toby is forced to examine everything he thought he knew about his family, his past, and himself.

I've read some books by the author many years ago and decided to read The Wych Elm because I loved the title. I really enjoyed this book. I think I need to start reading her books again. This is a tense, well-written thriller. I liked the fact the author uses a first-person narrator from Toby's POV. I loved this POV as it helps you get right inside the characters head when it's done well. It really works in this book. I also really liked the setting. I do enjoy books set in Ireland for some reason. Likely because the culture and history is very different to my own. There's a great sense of place in The Wych Elm. This is the kind of gripping, engrossing thriller I enjoy. I'd recommend this book.
