Have you ever considered how many sock-related sayings there are? No? You sad, sad person…
There are many, we will have you know.
‘Sock it to them!’
‘It blew my socks off!’
‘Put a sock in it!’
‘I worked my socks off!’
‘Bless their cotton socks!’
‘Pull your socks up!’
Why certain sayings get attached to socks – and not pants, tights, belts or negligees – we have no idea.
You don’t hear people saying, “pull your pants up!”, if somebody else has been lazy. The poor child comes home from a hard day at school, clutching a piece of paper revealing a long list of C grades in his latest exams, and a D for pottery. “Pull your pants up will you!” screams his mother, who wonders who will pay for her rent when she is 65.
However, some youth of today do wear their pants quite low. “Pull your pants up” may become the new “pull your socks up”. But for different reasons.
“It blew my pants off!”
It was only said by one person in history, Mr Bill Giles of Watford after standing outside the local Semtex factory when it exploded.
It has become fashionable to say, “that was so pants”, or variations thereof. It usually happens after watching any rom-com made in the last 30 years. But nobody says “that was so socks”.
We have no idea where these sock-related and pant-related sayings come from. No doubt we will be returning to this theme…
