1) The Wolverine- 20.5M Friday, 55M Weekend
Apparently, 55M is a weak opening, for a sequel to a poorly reviewed film despised by fans who saw it. I’d say the fact that The Wolverine opened to 55M shows the strength of the character, combined with word of mouth that this one doesn’t suck. America has agreed, and The Wolverine has earned an A- cinemascore.
2) The Conjuring- 7.3M Friday, 24M Weekend, 86M Total
3) Despicable Me 2- 4.8M Friday, 16M Weekend, 306M Total
4) Turbo- 4M Friday, 13M Weekend, 55M Total
5) Grown Ups 2- 3.6M Friday, 11M Weekend, 101M Total
6) Red 2- 2.7M Friday, 9M Weekend, 34M Total
7) Pacific Rim- 2.2M Friday, 7M Weekend, 83M Total
8) The Heat- 2M Friday, 6M Weekend, 141M Total
9) RIPD- 1.8M Friday, 6M Weekend, 24M Total
10) Fruitvale Station- 1.4M Total, 4M Weekend, 5.8M Total
11) The Way Way Back- 0.9M Total, 3M Weekend, 8.8M Total
12) Monsters University- 0.8M Total, 3M Weekend, 255M Total
13) World War Z- 0.8M Total, 3M Weekend, 192M Total
14) The To Do list- 0.5M Total, 1.5M Weekend, 1.5M Total
The per screen average for Friday was 998 dollars. That’s below other limited releases, like The Way Way Back and Fruitvale Station, as well as all of the Top 5. However, it is outperforming Red 2, Pacific Rim, and some others. So, mediocre results, I suppose. Nothing to get excited about.
