I was engrossed in this book from start to finish. The Way Back Home is a fantastic observation of friendship, love, loss and regret. North is an expert at leaving things off the page and much of the book's power is what isn't said or remarked upon. The book has a dark, haunted tone. Its clear Oriana, Jed and Malachy share a dark past but exactly what secret they share isn't revealed until the last few chapters of The Way Back Home and its all the more devastating because of this. Oriana, Jed and Malachy are fantastic characters, well-drawn, real and made of flesh and blood. The book has quite a large number of characters and they are all very well written.
