The Violent Century by @lavietidhar

By Pamelascott

A bold experiment has mutated a small fraction of humanity. Nations race to harness the gifted, putting them to increasingly dark ends. At the dawn of global war, flashy American superheroes square off against sinister Germans and dissolute Russians. Increasingly depraved scientists conduct despicable research in the name of victory

British agents Fogg and Oblivion, recalled to the Retirement Bureau, have kept a treacherous secret for over forty years. But all heroes must choose when to join the fray, and to whom their allegiance is owed-even for just one perfect summer's day.

From the World Fantasy and Campbell award-winning author of Central Station comes a sweeping novel of history, adventure, and what it means to be a hero.

I'm a huge fan of the Marvel books and superheroes in general so I was really looking forward to this book. The book exceeded every expectation and pretty much blew me away. This is a book that deals with big issues such as Auschwitz, fighting on the Eastern Front and the brutality of war. The superhero stuff via the actions of a disturbing German scientist is not the only focus of the novel. The book reminds me a lot of the X-Men. This is not a negative thing, trust me. I can just seem small comparisons between both. I'm also reminded of various spy books, movies and TV shows. This book asks a lot of big, searing questions about War and Nazi Germany in particular. I don't think I've come across this subject matter in fantasy fiction before. Impressive. I've read a few of Tidhar's books before and they tend to be brilliant and different.
