The Various Haunts of Men by @susanhillwriter

By Pamelascott
THEY ALL DISAPPEAR ON THE HILL.

A woman vanishes in the fog up on the Hill in Lafferton. The police have one lead - a pair of expensive cuff-links found in her flat, with a mysterious note attached to them.

Then a young girl, an old man and even a dog disappear in quick succession in exactly the same place.

Young policewoman Freya Graffham and Chief Inspector Simon Serrailler are given the task of unravelling the mystery. But can they find the Hill killer before he strikes again?

I'm quite a fan of the author and have read a decent number of her books. However, I've mostly read her ghost stories and stand-alone novels, novellas and stories. For some reason, I've not really read her crime fiction aside from a novella featuring Simon Serrailler (great name by the way). I've no idea why. The author is just really, really good at writing ghost stories. I'm glad I got a chance to read the first Simon Serrailler thriller. I love the title of the book. This made me want to read it. The Various Haunts of Men shares a lot of feature common across a police procedural; great characters, twists and turns and a fast-paced thrilling narrative. There are even occasional, creepy chapters narrated by the killer. Like all good thrillers, the author gives you information slowly; forcing you to read on and not all the cards are on the table until the very end. I look forward to reading more books featuring Simon Serrailler.
