(Washington) The United States will not accept new requests for protection for “dreamers”, these young people who arrived in the country illegally when they were children, but those who are already beneficiaries of the program will be able to renew it for one year, a senior official said on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump decided in 2017 to put an end to the DACA program, adopted under Barack Obama, which protects the “dreamers” (dreamers in French) of deportation, and allows them to obtain a social security number, a precious key to studying, working or driving in the United States.

But the Supreme Court inflicted a snub on him in mid-June, ruling that his decision was “arbitrary”, in particular because the government had not followed the rules of procedure.

From today, the government will no longer accept new applications to join the program, but will renew the status of those who have already obtained it. This renewal may be for one year, not two, as before, the senior official said on condition of anonymity.

Approximately 700 00 0 people benefit from the DACA program, most of them 'among them being from Latin America.
