When you wake up, look outside and see the sun shining, it's easy to be deceived and think it's warmer than it is. Hailing from the North East, I'm a realist and don't expect sunshine and rainbows everyday; I know to take a jacket.

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you might recall a yellow waterproof mac I love wearing. It's bright and colourful and it always makes me feel happier when I wear it, but sometimes it's just not right for an outfit. Let's face it, if I'm turning up to an event I want to stand out - but probably more so for my personality and conversation rather than being as bright as the sun. So for me, this is where the trusty trench coat comes in. Versatile, stylish and practical.

It works as a cover up for those blustery days, great if you've not checked the forecast and opted for a short skirt/dress. Oh I've done that so many times... it's great to finish off an outfit, you can dress it up, dress it down, so many possibilities.

My favorite way to wear my trench coat is with jeans, a striped tee (because let's face it my wardrobe is overflowing with them) and trainers, but because I was going for something slightly dressier here I've popped on my knee high boots. I've kept all the tones fairly neutral but you could pop a trench over a spring dress and easily take that outfit into the evening.

How would you style a trench coat and what items are you reaching for in your wardrobe during the change of seasons?
