Below is a current list of the top network shows, AFTER DVR numbers have been added in. This ranking only affects the rating in the demo (18-49), and not the broader audience. A lot of shows aren’t really expected to draw a large 18-49 crowd. Specifically, CBS shows have much larger audiences, but they often skew older. That’s why the most watched show on TV (NCIS) is only 13th on this list. I would be more concerned if I were a major network show that was targeting that demo (Dads, for example) and had an extremely low rating in the demo.
Based on these numbers, I don’t see how Hart of Dixie can survive another season. Even with The CW’s partnering deal with Netflix, you can’t keep renewing the lowest rated show on TV. Also in the “danger zone”, The Neighbors and Betrayal are both ‘barely watched’ for ABC. The 1.4 for Sean Saves The World isn’t acceptable. The 1.7 for Michael J Fox Show isn’t much better. I’d be worried if I were Dads, since the show should skew perfectly into the 18-49 demo, and isn’t.
On the flip side, now we understand why a lot of shows have gotten the renewals they have gotten. The Blacklist is in the Top 5, Agents of Shield is right behind it, and Sleepy Hollow already has a second season renewal. The highest rated show without a full-season pickup yet is Super Fun Night in 25th. Since it is outpacing almost every single ABC sitcom, except Modern Family, I can’t imagine it won’t be picked up. I also expect The Goldbergs to be renewed. I’m less certain about Trophy Wife, and while Back In The Game retains The Middle’s audience, it doesn’t retain the demo. It could go either way.
