The Too Much TV Roundup- 10/15/23

I haven’t watched it yet, but the new Rick and Morty voice cast premiered last night. Also, I truthfully decided to start watching Step By Step after noticing it on FreeVee, and a few hours later I saw Suzanne Somers died. I’m very weirded out about how that worked out.

9) 9) Fright Crew (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Unknown

Eli Roth produced this 10 episode animated show aimed at… I’m not really sure. Eli clearly wants to go hard, so there are some things and themes here that feel targeted for maybe middle school to high school aged kids, but the characters talk like they are in an elementary school program. I’m not a fan of the voice talent here.

Episode Grade: C+

8) Trophy Wife (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I wonder if the kid who played Bert is still adorable, even though he’s definitely a teenager now. But, shenanigans happen again. The weird thing was that Bert had this narration that made it feel like the season finale but there’s still 1 more episode.

Episode Grade: B-

7) Alf (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Alf uses a radio to contact the President. Hijinx ensues.

Episode Grade: B-

6) Step By Step (FreeVee)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

It’s very weird that I chose to start watching this TGIF staple, and Family Matters spinoff, the same day Suzanne Somers passes away. And, also one day before her birthday, and none of that was planned. Oddly enough, because this had a back door pilot, this starts with Episode 2, which includes a guest appearance from Urkel.

Episode Grade: B

5) Young Sheldon (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

Wallace Shawn was such a solid addition to this cast. He has a gret line in this episode about how Sheldon reminds him of himself, and later Sheldon is taking an IQ test and can’t follow the idea that there are different kinds of intelligence, and staunchly disagrees.

Episode Grade: B

4) Dreaming Whilst Black (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

The first scene, which featured one of the main cast going over why someone’s resume was awful, was hilarious. This film shifts in and out of that style of humor. not a bad pilot, but I’m not sure where it wants to be in terms of its jokes.

Episode Grade: B+

3) happy Endings (Roku)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I remembered this episode. The gang does different things, splitting up into three different groups. Penny almost has a solid date at a cooking event until Alex ruins it for her. Meanwhile, Dave decides it’s time to kick the ass of the guy who ruined his wedding.

Episode Grade: B+

2) Young Love (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I’m not sure who this is for. The age range, I mean. The 6 year old daughter seems wise beyond her years, and there seems to be a focus on the parents and their struggles, but this is adapted from the Oscar winning animated short Hair Love. It’s safe enough for the whole family (at least, the first episode is), but I’m not sure if kids will connect.

Episode Grade: A-

1) Goosebumps (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

The first episode definitely pays homage to Say cheese And Die, but this is rated TV-14, and I’d say it is earned. With a teenage lead cast, and some genuinely tense moments, I wouldn’t necessarily assume this is for kids because it’s on Disney Plus. Just accept that this is a lot more intentionally scary than either of the last two cinematic efforts, and is nothing like the 90’s show.

Episode Grade: A-
