The Too Much TV Roundup- 01/29/23

So, an interesting set of shows, some for the first time. How did the new shows stack up?

6) Saturday Night Live (NBC/Peacock)

English Audio Description?: No

Michael B Jordan is many things, but naturally hilarious is not one of them. I didn’t realize he was directing Creed 3 though, now I’m excited to see what he’s like as a director.

Final Grade: B-

5) Alert! (FOX/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Well, even though the pilot felt intense, it did nothing really to make me feel like I knew what the long term prospects are for this show. I’ll give it one more episode to see the growth, and who these characters are, but solid shows are built on solid casts. I didn’t feel that here. The premise for the pilot is far more interesting than any singular actor in the show.

Episode Grade: B-

4) Kaleidoscope (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

So this one I need to remember what color each episode was that I watched. I don’t know if Netflix changes up the order, but I’m literally just watching it in the order they give me. So, if it’s the same for everyone, then we are on track. As a stand alone episode, I got some nice Ocean’s 11 vibes, and Giancarlo Esposito. I think it’s hard to form an opinion of this show based on one episode, but this is where my head is at after watching, I believe, Yellow.

Episode Grade: B+

3) Your Honor (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

I did make it through the rather terrific first season of the show, but that was when I swear it was a limited series. now we’ve cobbled together a second season, and this might be like some of the other shows I’ve seen recently, like One Of Us is Lying, that did not understand it didn’t need to continue that story.

Episode Grade: B+

2) 911: Lone Star (FOX/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

This returned with a really solid first episode, and ended in a solid form when it turns out they may have stumbled on a biker gang that is actually a group of domestic terrorists. This is clearly a timely plot.

Episode Grade: A-

1) The Best Man: The Final Chapters (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

You know, I haven’t seen anything in this series since the movie back in 1999? I think it was 99. Maybe 98? It’s been a long time, and I can’t really remember that film. But, somehow, this show was crafted well, with an intro that tries to summarize everything we’ve missed, and I enjoyed it. I was expecting to not be able to follow this, but I followed it just fine.

Episode Grade: A
