Recently, my friend texted the group chat asking about phone cases. I am a die-hard Popsockets fan, so I said I knew she wouldn't like it, but I showed her the case and Popsocket I had recently ordered. Friends, it was a tomato-this tomato, to be specific. I'm so into the tomato trend in fashion that's going on right now...

I say my favorite color is orange, but really, it's Vermillion that has my heart. I've learned to find that gorgeous orange-red color when shopping online, it's often called tomato. My red Birkenstocks I bought last year? . A recent lipcolor I bought? Bright Tomato. This year has been a banner year for tomatoes in our garden and finding tomato-themed fashion.

The Tomato Trend in Fashion and Beauty... and Everywhere Else!

It started with TikTok in 2023 calling it "Tomato Girl Summer". (People) Decor caught wind of it and tomato became a hot color for homes. (Architectural Digest) Then this summer, Loewe offered a tomato bag after a viral tweet (Teen Vogue). Then chefs began trompe l'oeil tomato creations. (Eater)

And then, earlier this week, one of my friends on that group chat sent me this STAUD beaded purse, which won't even be released until October. I'm seeing a lot of tomato red in upcoming fall fashion, and I just love the humor along with one of my favorite colors! Bring on the tomato trend!

Bring on the Tomato Trend in Fashion and Beauty

Our parents maintained a pretty impressive vegetable garden when my sister and I were growing up. My dad, who grew up in NYC without gardens, loved getting his hands dirty and growing food. He was big into square-foot gardening, and we were overloaded with peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, and tomatoes from May to October. I often forgot my key to get in the house after school, and while I waited to be rescued, I'd hang out in the garden, popping cherry tomatoes into my mouth. And from November to April, we ate the tomatoes my mom canned from the summer surplus.

My husband is also an avid gardener, and just like my dad, his tomatoes always outshine any other produce. I type this at my dining table, surrounded by plates of tomatoes. To get them before the critters, we pick them as soon as some red shows and let them finish ripening in paper bags or cardboard boxes. One summer, we filled a dress box with green tomatoes and put them in the rooftop box for a road trip. By the time we reached Vermont, every tomato was perfectly ripened.

I don't tire of tomatoes; not only is the color my favorite, but also the fruit. I can easily eat multiple tomatoes each day of summer and love finding different ways to prepare them. Though really, nothing beats a tomato sandwich on sourdough with Duke's mayo!

One year for Christmas, my sister got me a tomato-shaped Le Creuset and it's my favorite for mac and cheese casserole. A few of them can be on eBay. Staub has some tomato-shaped cookware that is equally cute. Needless to say, I am so down for the tomato trend in fashion and beauty!
