The new Netflix comedy "Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga" should win anyone over, even if you are not a big fan of Will Ferrell and have no idea what Eurovision is.
The film stars Ferrell and Rachel McAdams as the titular Icelandic musical duo, who pursues a dream of making a living at the huge international music competition. The film features cameo appearances by former Eurovision performers, and it sounds less like a travesty than a celebration - even if it fully embraces senseless costumes and exaggerated production numbers.
Icelandic accents disappear and disappear, while the script - written by Ferrell and Andrew Steele - can feel a bit in numbers. But everything is easy to forgive, thanks to the film's obvious clumsiness.
"The Story of Fire Saga" also benefits from some memorable performances. McAdams, for his part, brings a surprising conviction to his dramatic scenes and his songs (obviously synchronized on the lips). The film is also a treat for fans of Dan Stevens, as the actor of the "Legion" deliciously goes over the head as Russian singer Alexander Lemtov.
