Another list serving purely of a ranking of every active show on my watchlist, and my random way of ranking them every week. Which show ended up on top? Joining the list this week are Midcentury Modern (Hulu), Dying For Sex (Hulu) the Bondsman (Amazon), Devil May Cry (Netflix), Million Dollar secret (Netflix), and Pulse (Netflix). Generally, a show dips from the previous week if I just didn’t get around to a new episode.
WINNER: The Studio (Apple Plus) with audio description- After 3 episodes, it became clear that the new Seth Rogen comedy is exceptional. It truly is something fresh, something new, and it has carved a space for itself among a sea of terrific peak television. The guest stars each week are quite surprising, and I can’t wait to see what else is in store. I actually debuted it at #1, and nothing has caused that to change.
Runner Up: the Righteous Gemstones (MAX) with audio description- The last episode, featuring the clan at their vacation home, left me agog. Or maybe a gagged? It really depends on how you felt about those final moments.
#3- Adolescence (Netflix) with audio description- I finished the show, so it will not reappear on the next weekly rankings. It is a damn fine limited series, among a handful of really strong limited shows from the past year.
#4- Yellowjackets (Paramount Plus) with audio description- Truthfully, this show is insane. I’m convinced there is no good vs evil going on here, but rather how evil corrupts good, and then everyone is just a sliding scale variation on evil. Then, you end up rooting for people who have done bad things because the show is positioning them as leads, but are they really? No one here is clean, and this last episode reminds us that Shauna might follow a protagonist arc, but she’s anything but.
#5- Reacher (Amazon) with audio description- Another show finished, and will not be returning to the list next week. I enjoyed the finale. It almost felt like Pauly was the more challenging boss fight for Reacher, but hey. Perspective. Now we wait for Season 4.
#6- From (MGM Plus) with audio description- Steady from last week. I finally finished Season 1, so I’m off to catch up on Season 2. I hope the audio described all of this. Not just Season 1.
#7- Last Week tonight (MAX) no audio description- highest rated show without audio description.
#8- The Residence (Netflix) with audio description- Shonda Rhimes’s new political murder mystery has been a showcase for uzo Aduba, and to a lesser extent, the rest of the ensemble. I’m four episodes deep, and I already want to see Aduba solve more crimes.
#9- the White Lotus (MAX) with audio description- Only one episode left. A solid season, though mostly dominated by Walton Goggins. My top 10 is virtually unchanged.
#10- Abbott Elementary (Hulu) with audio description- I really enjoyed the last episode, which found a way to rope Ava back into the fold in a way that reminded her she belonged at Abbott and it is worth fighting for.
#11- St Dennis Medical (Peacock) with audio description- Another steady and reliable sitcom. It has already been renewed for a second season.
#13- Mythic Quest (Apple Plus) with audio description- I believe this also now only has 1 episode left. Ian has left Poppy in a tough spot in terms of what choice she should make.
#13- Pop Culture Jeopardy (Amazon) with audio description- I still need to finish this. I’m probably a little over halfway through.
#14- Elzabeth (Paramount Plus) with audio description- A really fun show that has already been renewed for a third season.
#15- Dope Thief (Apple Plus) with audio description- Brian Tyree Henry is toplining a really energetic crime thriller that occasionally throws a laugh or two in, but then reminds you of the stakes.
#16- Ghosts (Paramount Plus) with audio description- Another reliable comedy. the last episode I watched had the hot Australian stripper die and stir up some trouble.
#17- The Bondsman (Amazon) with audio description- I feel like this is the most deserving of the new shows to get a high start, and this feels right after watching the pilot for Kevin Bacon’s new supernatural horror crime comedy. I’ve heard it gets gorier, and with Blumhouse behind it, I just want it to stay good.
#18- the Daily Show (Paramount Plus) no audio description- I only watched one of the episodes this week.
#19- Have I Got News For You (MAX) no audio description- this format continues to work for me.
#20- Good American Family (Hulu) with audio description- I’ve seen all 4 available episodes, and I believe Christine. the show does a much better job proving her point than being neutral. I know nothing about Natalia Grace, but this show doesn’t make her look good.
#21- top Chef (Peacock) with audio description- I’ve been a long time fan, and I’m impressed with how much they squeeze into the audio description even though we can’t see the food.
#22- Midcentury Modern (Hulu) with audio description- Nathan Lane’s new sitcom is the most delightfully gay thing I could watch, and i love it. the audio description, featuring Roy Samuelson, is really great as well. this is after only one episode though.
#22-Happy Face (Paramount Plus) with audio description- this based on a true story serial killer drama has a terrific performance from Annaleigh Ashford. there are currently 4 episodes, and I’ve seen 3.
#24- Matlock (Paramount Plus) with audio description- Steady and reliable. I feel like the mystery for season 1 must be coming to a close soon.
#25- Running Point (Netflix) with audio description- I’m halfway through KAte Hudson’s new sitcom, which is already renewed for a second season. She just went through some pre-wedding drama.
#26- the Walking Dead: Dead city (Netflix) with audio description- Hard to rank as it is the only show I’m rewatching. It is my first time with audio description, however. I am a bigger fan of the Walking dead, and it is nice to have the clarity on what actually happened since AMC Plus doesn’t support audio description.
#27- dying For Sex (Hulu) with audio description- the first episode is all I’ve seen, and this show could easily go up from here. It most likely will, from what I’ve heard.
#28- the Wheel Of time (Amazon) with audio description- One of the best audio described shows right now. Every week, the description has great moments. i believe I’m 4 episodes deep into the new season.
#29- the Rookie (Hulu) with audio description- this last purge centric episode followed the creatively strong bus episode, and I’m thinking the writers might be getting their mojo back.
#30- Side Quest (Apple Plus) with audio description- I really loved the second episode. I would spin off that comic book store into its own series.
#31- Long Bright river (Peacock) with audio description- 4 episodes in. Amanda Seyfried is doing great. This last episode, with her asshole ex, and her attempt at a normal birthday showed us a bit more of her life in flashback as well, giving us a lot of context.
#32- Deli Boys (Hulu) with audio description- This show just leapt up a few more spots. It is on the rise, which is a good thing to be.
#34- Win Or Lose (Disney Plus) with audio description- Only one episode left. WHow will this all end?
#35- Survival Of The thickest (Netflix) with audio description- 2 episodes deep, and really no change from last week.
#36- Tracker (Paramount Plus- with audio description- A steady performer for me. Already renewed.
#37- The Connors (Hulu) with audio description- I’m a longtime fan, so this makes sense for me. I realize it isn’t nuclear physics.
#38- daredevil Born Again (Disney Plus) with audio description- Virtually no change from last week. Only two episodes left.
#39- Invincible (Amazon) with audio description- I’m 7 episodes in, so I feel like there is either 1 left, or 3. I’m close to being done either way.
#40- SNL (Peacock) with audio description- Slipped a little because I didn’t watch a new episode.
#41- Suits LA (Peacock) with audio description- Are we finally moving past this one case?
#42-celebrity Jeopardy (Hulu) with audio description- Starting to rise again after a period of no new episodes.
#43- 911 (Hulu) with audio description- Slid a bit because I did not watch a new episode.
#44- The Great North (Hulu) no audio description- with 4 season renewals for The Simpsons, Bob’ Burgers, Family Guy, and American Dad, plus the already renewed Universal Basic Guys, i do worry about the future of this show.
#45- million dollar Secret (Netflix) with audio description- A pretty fun new entry into the reality competition genre. I’m 2 episodes in.
#46- American Idol (Hulu) no audio description- Needs audio description.
#47- the Masked Singer (Hulu) no audio description- needs audio description.
#48- Survivor (Paramount Plus) with audio description- Has some pretty great audio description. The challenges are really well described.
#49- Devil May cry (Netflix) with audio description- I’ve seen two episodes, and it has a nice start. The audio description is great, and the theme song is a throwback.
#50- Real Time With Bill Maher (MAX) no audio description- I disagree with bill a lot. that is why it is lower than like-minded shows.
#51- Wolf King (Netflix) with audio description- A pretty solid animated adventure for the whole family.
#52- Will Trent (Hulu) with audio description- Just got renewed. hopefully next season will be better.
#53- Krapapolis (Hulu) no audio description- I’d like this to stick around as well. Not as much as The Great North…
#54- Surface (Apple Plus) with audio description- I did not watch a new episode.
#55- Pulse (Netflix) with audio description- i didn’t catch much of anything interesting in the first episode, but I plan on watching at least one more.
#56- The Traitors: UK (Peacock) no audio description- No new episode from last week.
#57- The Kardashians (Hulu) with audio description- No new episode form me last week.
#58- Grimmsburg (Netflix) with audio description- I did watch a new episode, so this can hang on to the top 60.
#59- Berlin ER (Apple plus) with audio description- i did watch a new episode, but it still slid. I like it, but now I also have Pulse. And neither is particularly mind blowing.
#60- papa’s House (Paramount Plus) with audio description- no new episode last week.
the Danger Zone: 1923 (Paramount Plus), Grosse Pointe Garden Society (Peacock), Cassandra (Netflix), and The leopard (Netflix)
removed From watchlist: The Eastern Gate (MAX), How Disney Built America (Hulu)
