The Small Screen Diaries- 12/30/24

Posted on the 31 December 2024 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

It’s the end of 2024 as we know it, until tomorrow, when I write about today. it is all very confusing, and I thank you all for being able to have the “Pacencia y Fe” to follow it all.

TV Shows Watched: Squid Game: S2E3 (Netflix) with audio description, Laid: S1E5 (Peacock) with audio description, the Great north: S5E1 (Hulu) no audio description, La Machinaa: S1E6? (Hulu) with audio description, Pop Culture Jeopardy: S1E3 (Amazon) with audio description, and Landman: S1E3 (Paramount Plus) with audio description.

Movies Watched: Dandelion (Apple Store) with audio description, The Seed Of the Sacred Fig (screener) no audio description, The Body Politic (screener) no audio description, and How To Live With Norman Mailer (screener) no audio description

Best Episode: Squid Game- It’s not even fair. Let the games begin! That is all I shall say.

Runner Up: Laid: Again, I’m really digging this show. It doesn’t seem to have the warmest reception, but I’m cracking up. The one random guy is now the sex loophole, while some things don’t stay a secret, and the cops somehow think she was responsible for a guy getting sucked out of a plane mid flight.

Best Performance: Stephanie Hsu (Laid)- She’s been funny all season, and the moment with her in the interrogation room had me cracking up, but she gets the win for her dramatic moment, when she’s reading someone else’s wedding vows, and realizing what she is missing.

Best Performance (tie)- Lee Yung (Squid Game)- there’s no way that in this episode, with everything his character has to go through, tht the original actor isn’t acting his face off. He has so many big moments here, now is the easy time to single out just one. Even with the dub audio I get.

Runner Up: Billy Bob Thornton (Landman)- I cannot stress enough how this role feels like it was crafted only for Billy Bob and no one else. He’s amazing in this show.

Best Audio Description- Squid Game- Again, it really isn’t fair. The games begin, and a lot is there to describe, in addition to introducing a ton of new characters. In fact, there is no runner up. It is just far and away today.

Best Moment Of Audio Description: squid Game- How do i say this without spoilers? Fly Me To the Moon? If you know, you know. Think of what you watched, and what song was playing.

Runner Up: Squid Game- If you can see, never underestimate the power of facial recognition. but, Liz Gutman really tried to bring a fuck load of new people to life in one episode. I didn’t quite grasp on to all of them. There’s one guy, who I think took the cake for sure, and was given a lot more screentime, but other than him, maybe a few I’d remember next episode. but, Squid Game threw a lot at you, because you need to have that wide net, since you don’t know who will make it through each round, and there’s more power in seeing people you were just introduced. To be killed off, than there is in just a bunch of randoms you never met. A very challenging task. It cannot fully work, but it wouldn’t have worked at all without audio description. Dune Prophecy had a little bit of the same problem, introducing too many characters at once. It is just a bitch for those who don’t have sight, and all the argument in the world for more unique dub voices to help support the uniqueness of these characters.

Worst Episode: I liked everything. I could tag the one show without AD here, but I’m far more disappointed that Neon hasn’t audio described The Seed of The Sacred Fig, which I did sit through, and it is long. None of it was in English, but it did have a nice score, so that’s something. I suppose. If you are grasping for a straw.

Worst Performance: I feel like it is someone in the supporting cast of Landman who isn not Jon Hamm or Demi Moore, though I’m still trying to figure out who is the weakest link. But one of the reasons Thornton looks so good, is that everyone else around him fell out of not being called back for Days of Our lives.

Worst Audio Description- Again, Seed Of The Sacred Fig. The lack of. the reason The great North has made it to Season 5 with me is the stellar voice cast makes it feel like an experience, but that is very much not true for everything. Not every show has Nick Offerman and Will Forte to carry the load.
