The Small Screen Diaries- 11/04/24

Well, it is the day. It’s that day every year where I think to myself… “Fuck. I forgot to review V For Vendetta, so I could release that on November 5th.” No matter how hard I try, I can never “Remember remember the 5th of November.”, although technically, this column is what I saw the day before, on November 4th, so in could watch it on the 5th, and then tell you about it on the 6th? Why? Is something else happening today? Something more important than Guy Fawkes Day?

TV Shows Watched: The Penguin: S1E7 (MAX) with audio description, Somebody Somewhere: S3E2 (MAX) with audio description, The Franchise: S1E5 (MAX) with audio description, Tracker: S2E4 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, and the Last Nights At Tremore Beach: S1E3 (Netflix) with audio description. Oh, and last Week Tonight: Most Recent (MAX) no audio description.

Podcasts: Offline With John Faverau (Politics), Countdown With Keith Olbermann (Politics), Inside With Jen Sackey (Politics), The Ezra Klein Show (Politics/ Interview with Jon Stewart), Risky Business with Nate Silver (Politics). There’s a theme here, for sure.

YouTube: The Awards Contender (predicting The Globes featuring Next Best Picture). I actually would love to talk with Brian about the awards season sometime. just trying to manifest that.

Movies: None.

I say “Movies: none”, but that 3rd episode of Netflix’s international limited The last Nights at Tremore Beach is feature length. Over 75 minutes. It certainly is an interesting show, with a story I’m constantly bamboozled by, and having to pay a lot of attention as we slip in and out of “what is reality?” I’m happy Netflix is describing more and more International content, because that’s how it should be, and I’m trying to support it. This has the level of dubbing acting quality where you might not even notice it was, they are actually really on that level of closeness. The audio description has been really good so far.

But, i have to mention, and I realize my little blog is in no way in the same scope as Variety, but the team doing the audio description for The Penguin got themselves a write up in one of the biggest Entertainment News platforms. It is a huge visibility boost for audio description in general, why it matters, and most importantly, celebrating the quality of carefully crafted, human narrated audio description. Not AI. not cost cutting. Those don’t get featured in Variety. But, International Digital Center, Dakota Green, and Ren Leach get mentioned. And they absolutely deserve it. I can only hope this positive attention helps turn a few heads our way, and get some more audio description out there, or causes someone to choose human over TTS. I can only hope.
