Election Day is almost here. Have you voted? Is there a guy standing outside your polling place with a machete? It’s definitely not Jason.

Well, the Abbott Elementary episode this week just did not work. This is one of those cases where you need a really engaged, top tier writer, and those people don’t work for ViTech. I think they work at companies that don’t feel like cost cutting measures. To be fair, this is the Halloween episode, so lots of atypical things, but also… most of the jokes revolved around those atypical things, like specific Halloween costumes. An example would be that Janeane was happy to see a Black Panther costume, but when the mask came up, she was less than excited. no audio description was given as to why. My guess? it was a white kid. Like, you can totally appreciate Black Panther, but there are a bazillion typically white superheroes. He may not be real, it’s still cultural appropriation, and that’s the joke. That’s at least how I now have to interpret the joke, because there was no audio description there either. I had a hard time figuring out how they looked like DNA and the Mosquito from jurasssic Park.

Sitcoms do not give you a ton of time, but you can still feel the beats in Abbott Elementary, and to continue to see this show get minor league audio description just feels wrong. This is a hot show, with likely a lot of eyes on it. In fact, this is the show someone once told me, a fully sighted person, that they used audio description on because they liked to catch up on Abbott Elementary during their jog instead of music or something else. But, now this is the representation of accessibility for that person, who probably wonders how on earth I’m ever able to follow anything.

I’ll stop dragging this company when they start making better audio description. This was, once again, disappointing.
