TV News: So, Taylor Sheridan is pumping out the content because I just saw a teaser for Season 2 of Lioness which is apparently coming really soon to Paramount Plus. He just had Mayor Of Kings Town in the summer, Tulsa King just dropped, and Lioness is coming next month? He’s like Ryan Murphy, who has an ungodly amount of TV shows premiering in sept/Oct. Seriously, I can think of five off the top of my head.
TV Shows Watched: Agatha All Along: S1E1 and S1E2 (Disney plus) with audio description, Monsters:EPS 1 and 2 (They added an S to the title, so I’m unclear if this is now Season 1 of Monsters, or Season 2 of Monster) (Netflix) with audio description, Twilight Of The Gods: S1E1 (Netflix) with audio description, and The Daily Show: Most Recent (Paramount Plus) no audio description.
Podcasts: The John Campia Show (Agatha All Along reaction), The Watch (Agatha All Along recap), 538 Politics (Politics), and Future Hindsight (Topic: Education)
Movies: The Babysitter (Netflix) with audio description
Hot Takes. Not deep dives. But, hot takes. Basically, for every show I saw that had audio description though.
Twilight Of The Gods- My first reaction was “oh God, it’s Zach Snyder”, but then I remembered I didn’t hate Legend of the Guardians, and it is probably one of his more underrated efforts. But, following a show like Blood Of Zeus, and the live-action Kaos, I’m not sure why Netflix would position this right now. I’m not sure Rebel moon built Snyder the kind of demand that would warrant yet another mythological show at this exact time. My hot take was “If I finish this season, it will be a miracle.”, and in terms of the audio description (Descriptive Video Works, I believe), I cringed when the character got naked his… endowment…. Was mentioned. Not because it shouldn’t be described, but because Zack Snyder just feels like he’s throwing things at the wall to make it stick, so of course there’s an animated penis. It’s loud, violent, and unnecessary as a show. The audio description does a good job of keeping up with Snyder’s fever dream from hell.
Agatha All Along, which is a great show, and quickly one of my favorites on TV, gave me a quick hot take moment. How about… we describe “naked”. Like, when you leve it open to the imagination, my imagination leads to Kathryn Hahn running down the middle of the street with her tits flapping in the wind in a Disney Plus/Marvel show, and then parents everywhere breaking their television sets. it is my understanding that the front is not shown, but she’s shown from the rear. Still, slightly risqué for this type of show, but context would be appreciated. When you say naked, I think naked. I take you at your word. I assume everything is visible. it apparently was not. However, kudos on describing the visuals used to block Wiccan (I mean, “unnamed teen”) from revealing who he is to Agatha. I’ve heard what it looked like to sighted people, and the audio description matched that.
And finally, monsters. i didn’t watch Season 1, which the families were asking people to not watch. Instead, everyone ignored the victims, watched the show, and gave it Emmys. This show didn’t seem to have that same controversy, so I dove in. Episode 1 features the murders. Just as a heads up. And, they were apparently quite brutal. The boys used shotguns, which are not known for their cleanliness. The description in the murder sequence was very gory, and appropriately stomach churning. Monsters goes after the crime like American Sports Story is supposed to. At no point do you ever like Eric and Lyle, and the show doesn’t want you to. If anything, the tone to this show supports my theory that because Ryan Murphy found out that Aaron Hernandez was closeted, he decided a different approach was needed and he restructured that into an inappropriate narrative. Because Eric and Lyle are just straight up psychopaths with apparently no latent tendencies, Murphy has no problem presenting them as assholes.
