My little rant section down here is not about what I watched today, but the first part is actually about what i didn’t watch. Peacock dropped their new show Fight Night without audio description. Now, I checked on this twice, once pretty early, and once much later, and there was still no audio description. I will try again today. this isn’t the first time they’ve dropped the ball. Though, apparently the last time i was the only one to notice that Champions didn’t drop with audio description, because by the time I complained about it on social, they had fixed the problem. This time, instead of looking like I’m some fool who doesn’t know how to turn on audio description, I figured I’d wait… make a post… and then see if audio description appeared the next day. At some point, I’ll watch the first episode at least and then explain why the show needs audio description, but it does feel weird for a Kevin Hart/Taraji P Henson/Terrence Howard/Samuel L Jackson show to not have audio description.
And for the second part, I’m calling out Mike Flanagan. I did on my YouTube as well. Hush, which is a fantastic film of his, was a Netflix exclusive for the past eight years (ish), but after his contract with Netflix expired, apparently so did Hush. Now, the movie is out there, just floating aimlessly. This has put it on VOD and Shout Factory has announced a physical disc. But all of this is being done without the audio description track that was created for the film. Since this all seems to be tied to Flanagan, I’m calling him out.Since he produces a podcast in his free time, and can jump on as executive producer for Chris Stuckmann’s Shelby oaks, I feel like this is something he could easily put on his plate. I’m not asking for much. Just that the film continue to have the accessibility for blind and visually impaired viewers to have continued access. I’m sure Mike feels he has the absolute right to decide where his film lands post-Netflix, but I feel like my right to accessibility trumps that. Hush used to have accessibility. Now it does not. that seems like a Mike Flanagan problem. Let’s see if he can or will do anything about it.
