The Small Screen Diaries: 07/13/24

I finished season 1 of Exploding Kittens (Netflix), which now has a review on my YouTube channel, in case you forgot I’m on Youtube as well (YouTube.com/macthemovieguy), but I will say the back half of this really made me think about common slang terms, how common are they, and to whom? In one of the episodes, the teenage son Travis is killed by his friends, one of whom does a squat/stand in repetition. Liz Gutman, who wrote the narration, describe the motion as is, however find me a gamer that hasn’t heard of TeaBagging. I guess, some people wouldn’t necessarily get that if they have never played online games, but it is a reference for an audience that would have gotten it. Just by describing the motion, a regular person who had no idea what this was wouldn’t have thought twice about it, but the reason it is funny is because those who know what is is… know what it is called. However, I’m not even sold on my own point of view here. I think International Digital Center knocked another out of the park, Liz’s written audio description was great, highlighting moments that paid homage to Free Willy, and including cameos from trademarked characters like Ronald McDonald and the Michelin Man. Jamie Lemcheck also is a consistently strong narrator choice.

I also watched another episode of The GOAT (Amazon), and let’s just say I don’t think anyone thought Reza was going to win. He’s a contestant that makes things fun, and certainly I see the appeal for casting him, but he was booted pretty quickly off The Traitors as well. An acquired taste. Sorry for the spoiler, but I really believe no one watching this actually would think he would win.

I also watched older audio described titles from 911: Season 5 (Hulu), Young Sheldon: Season 2 (MAX), The Golden Girls: Season 7 (Hulu), Veep: Season 5 (MAX), and the season finale of The Weakest Link (Peacock).
