The Small Screen Diaries- 07/11/24

Yesterday was Slurpee day and all I got was The Boys (Amazon) and a Christmas Special? I guess for a show that always runs during a certain time of year, if they want to deal with Christmas, they just have to do it. Hacks had the same problem. So Ryan is filming a cringeworthy special, firecracker is more regarded by Homelander, Sage is back to normal, A-train is ready to get off at this stop, Milk needs to get his family out of town, Butcher is seeing things that aren’t there, Deep is having deep relationship problems with an octopus, Noir is talking, Frenchie is feeling guilty, and really this all feels the same for a penultimate episode. Except, we do get to find out how this universe handles shape shifters. And, of course, it is gross.

Evil (Paramount Plus) had Cheryl make the ultimate power move against Leland. I really thought things wouldn’t work out for her, especially when she had to denounce Satan and all his works, but she was able to put things on a different path. Meanwhile, our trio is trying to stop a man from killing himself and his family based on a vision. Cheryl had the better storyline.

Trying to get more series reviews out, I watched the first half of Sausage Party: Foodtopia (Amazon), which goes further than the film does. The food sex stuff is way over the top. The series is also batty. In this series, the food has supposedly killed all remaining humans and now lives in a peaceful utopia where they have sex all day. then, they learn about things like… rain. Birds. And that one human they forgot to kill. Some of the original voice cast returns, including Seth Rogen, Kristin Wiig, Michael Cera, and Edward Norton. Sadly, Salma Hayek’s taco is missing. I don’t fully agree with all the mechanisms at play here, like the rain wouldn’t necessarily affect every item. Jars and Cans should have a very different experience than bread products. Also, I think a bag of chips was melting or something, and that’s just not how water works. Even our main character is a hot dog, and while getting wet wouldn’t be amazing for him, I’d be more concerned at this point as to his lack of refrigeration.

I also may or may not mention this again, but i like to give shows a one-off to say they don’t have audio description. sadly, ABC/Hulu hadn’t figured out how to port audio description, if it exists, for the new season of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, which is celebrating the anniversary of the shows original premiere, and also had the first million dollar winner from back in the day in the audience. The guests are now duos, with John Mulaney and Nick Kroll teaming up, and Kenan and Kel as the second half. The fact that the latter of those pairs don’t work together more is surprising. yes, Kenan has been on SNL forever, but there’s a level of joy from the audience that is above the first duo, because people inherently want to see those two together. I wish they would act in more things together. Lorne Michaels made a mistake by not taking Kel at the same time onto SNL, though he’ll never admit to it. The list of performers rejected by SNL is more embarrassing than just Kel Mitchell.
