The Small Screen Diaries- 07/01/24

The year is half over, and what do we have to show for it? Another episode of House Of The Dragon (MAX), which was more excellent work by the team of DeWolfe/Samuelson on that audio description writing/narration. This episode damn near checked in on everyone, and served as a nice “where are we now”, with the big take always for me being that Allicent’s brother seems useless and unlikely to survive the season, Damon’s nightmare had imagery that shook me, and Raynera really seemed to also be affected after her conversation with Allicent. And Jace? He tightened his grip on that sword real good. I’m joking, he was featured in other scenes, but he really didn’t do much while his parents ended up doing quite a bit.

How is Eric (Netflix) still going? I should just binge watch this shit and get it done. Most of this episode seemed like it was building to a handoff of a kid who had not been kidnapped, and then his dad was a stone’s throw from him for most of the episode. Somehow, there’s more to this story, and I blame the writers. Tight writing. Less episodes. Limited series do not need to go on forever. This show would be better off with one less episode, as would have Ripley. Shoutout to Paula Hoffman on that narration though.

I finished My Lady Jane (Amazon) today, and I don’t expect you to be where I am. I also plan on putting together a season review separately, but I’d recommend the show. It does have Season 2 potential. It is not a limited series. Amazon never let me get to the audio description section, so I have no idea. Even on the last episode, I got thrown into some random old movie from probably fifty years ago. I backed out of that fast.

I’m now just one episode from being done with Clipped (Hulu), which is Ok. I think Laurence Fishburne is going to be my strongest takeaway, also because it is really hard to root for the Sterlings. I’ve come to realize that what Jackie Weaver is doing here is actually perfection. I really dislike her character, but the only problem is that Ed O’Neill is just so damn likeable, that even though he’s saying all the problematic racist stuff, I still hate the wife more. Weaver broke onto the scene with a complicated and memorable villain in Animal Kingdom, so she’s good at this. O’Neill is the dad from modern Family. Casting is everything.

I knocked out another episode of Transformers: EarthSpark (Paramount Plus), still in season 1. As a reminder that this show does have audio description, in case you’ve been disappointed by the last few Disney drops that lack it.

The fourth episode of The Bear (Hulu) had this fantastic scene with Richie and his kid. I’m getting more and more impressed with Eben Moss Baccarat’s acting as this series moves forward. At times, it seems like our lead, Carmine, is stuck in character development, but Richie has come such a long way, and seeing him as a father is just the icing on the cake. An excellent FYC episode for him for next year.

That 90’s Show (Netflix) is still going. Who is dating who? That’s the question. I didn’t even realize that Ozzy had a boyfriend. Man, I struggle to pay attention and remember mediocre TV shows. I keep hoping original cast members will pop up, and thank freaking god for Debra jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith who are still magic together, even when stuck with Saved By The Hell: The Dull Class.
