BREAKING NEWS. Last night, while trying to get back to sleep, I had Saturday Night Live (NBC) on, and the damn thing had audio description. I kid you not. I’m planning on also checking out Peacock to see if this is getting ported to the Cock the day after, but it aired live, with live audio description. I didn’t even realize how helpful it was until the opening credits, and I realized there were cast members I had no idea what they looked like. Also, the Scooby Doo sketch was clearly filled with visual humor references, and that whole thing made more sense because of audio description. It only took 49 seasons, but dammit, this thing finally got audio description for its season finale. I hope I wasn’t the only one to experience this, and I’m hoping it wasn’t a test run, and their 50th Anniversary carries it as well.Props to whoever did the audio description. I didn’t make it to the end. I did fall back to sleep.
Now, after that, everything else seems way less impressive. I have now seen the first two episodes of The Big Cigar (Apple Plus), a new limited series based on a true story that stars Andre Holland as a real life leader of the Black Panthers, who is trying to evade capture by being part of the fake production of a movie that can get him to Cuba. Think Argo, but with more of an Ocean’s 11 vibe. Don Cheadle directed, and the audio description did a nice job. If you are thinking about watching this, I’d go ahead and try to do both episodes. The first explains who Huey was, and the second explores more of the how they plan to do this.
I finished A gentleman In Moscow (Paramount Plus) which has one of my favorite audio description tracks of 2024 so far. I thought the series had a nice ending, this is easily now my favorite Ewan McGregor performance, and i can’t recommend this show enough.
Will Trent (Hulu) had a weird moment where I think the audio description looped. there’s a moment where Will is headed into the water and the narration said “The Sun. The Sun…” and kept going. I don’t know what was up with that, but the episode offered up a climax to the uncle storyline, and set up the finale.
Them (Amazon) is still creepy as hell, and it keeps getting weird. It mixes social justice with social horror, and it does it so well. It makes things very uncomfortable, but this genre is supposed to make you uncomfortable.
I also finished We Were The Lucky Ones (Hulu) which showed who survived, and who didn’t, and explains why we followed this family, and what the survivors went on to do. Joey King deserves an Emmy nomination from this show. I’m still floored it was her. It blows my mind. What a talent.
The third episode of A Man in Full (Netflix) still has me so conflicted. There are still multiple storylines, and even though I shouldn’t be rooting for the billionaire played by Jeff Daniels, the banker is just such a douche, and he’s a banker. So, who really has the moral high ground? this series is like watching a no win scenario play out over 7 episodes.
The Rookie (Hulu) is getting really good this season, as the spoiler that happened at the end of the last episode looms large during this week’s entry, and puts Tim in the hot seat. but mainly, we see this criminal underbelly world coming together, and this finale could be a doozy this season. I was legit scared for Chen at certain points, since this show has killed off main characters before.
And finally, in this long ass day of mine, I also watched the second episode of Hacks (MAX) which is taking the torch from Ms Maisel a bit and diving into late night TV I suppose. It’s not the exact same storyline, but as soon as it started to happen, my brain immediately went to the terrific final season of Maisel.
