Happy Star Wars Day! There’s a new Disney series of shorts that drops today, which I’ll have thoughts on later. check it out!
TV Shows Watched: North of north: S1E6 (Netflix) with audio description, Government Cheese: S1E4 (Apple TV +) with audio description, Dying For Sex: S1E7 (Hulu) with audio description, Got To Get Out Of Here: S1E3 (Hulu) with audio description, Survivor: S48E10 (Paramount Plus) wit audio description, Lazarus: S1E4 (MAX) with audio description, The Great North: S5E9 (Hulu) no audio description, and 1923 (S2E? (Paramount Plus) with audio description.
Best Episode: Dying For Sex- In the series penultimate episode, Molly has one last shot at finishing the whole reason for the show. Did she achieve it? That would be a spoiler.
Runner Up: the Great North- look. it is a weird day. I know this is the one series with no audio description, but somehow I wasn’t thinking, and if you look at my weekly rankings, basically every single show except Dying For sex trends in the bottom half. I’ve been watching this show for 5 seasons, the longest of any other show on the list, and it is the one most likely to not leave my list if it were to continuously be renewed. While there was nothing special about the episode, there wasn’t anything special other than Dying For Sex.
Best Audio Description- Dying For Sex- not because it is the best, but because this show has consistently leaned into the sexually explicit nature of the show. this episode, Molly sees a man whit a blurred out face as well, which is just one more reason I liked this track.
Runner Up: 1923- This has pretty consistently strong audio description as well, it is just my least favorite Yellowstone spinoff.
Best Performance: Michelle Williams (Dying For Sex)- It is always a tough call between her and Jenny Slate, but I’ll give her the edge here, as Molly and her sex partner of choice debate whether or not this is really the time to achieve the climax.
runner ups: Jenny Slate (Dying For Sex) and Harrison Ford (1923)- Just so the whole category isn’t populated by one show, I thought Harrison Ford gave a lot of gusto in an episode where he had to rally, and also rally his cowboys to help protect his son who he just learned is coming back home. But, Jenny Slate is basically perfect. She has some of the most emotionally devastating lines and moments, but also hilarious ones where she acts out what she can remember from Clueless, as well as a bunch of other silly things. Williams feels like a safe choice for an Emmy nomination, but I’m really hoping Emmy voters see the range Jenny Slate is nailing.
Best Moment Of Audio Description: Sex (Dying For Sex)- Most of the episode is Williams essentially (for the lack of a better word) edging her way through a sexual encounter that might very well be her last.It is well described.
Runner Up: Sex (North of North)- So, in this episode, our lead character has the opportunity to maybe hook up with a kind of silly but hot character, and the scene is mostly played for laughs, and worked really well for a series with decent audio description. everything about the scene, from him feeding her the meat, to the loincloth, to description of him yanking her jeans off, or getting rid of her top and revealing a black lace bra, and even the move he does with picking her up and holding her up under her ass, everything was oddly perfect and I have no notes.
Worst Of….- While these shows don’t excite me as much as some of the others, they all feel like shows I’ll finish their seasons. However, I’m glad 1923 is ending. I probably wouldn’t watch a second season of Lazarus. based on right now, I wouldn’t watch a second season of Government cheese either. the best series is limited, and the second best has no audio description, which would leave me with two reality shows and north of North, which isn’t a great comedy, but is easy to take. malaise? I think that’s what this is.
