The Small Screen Diaries- 05/03/24

Since today is Star Wars Day, let me start off by saying May The 4th Be With You. but, this is about the shows I watched on the 3rd, which isn’t Star Wars Day. So, no Star Wars here. Sorry, Force fans.

Second day in the row i get to talk about how audio description for an ABC show failed to make it to Hulu. This week’s episode of Abbott Elementary (ABC) had no audio description as of 6PM EST on 05/03/24. This episode is from Wednesday, so it really should have had it. The episode was still fun, but… I don’t talk about things that don’t have audio description beyond the first episode. I’ve already said too much.

for contrast, The Connors (Hulu) actually did have audio description. So, that made the list, but on Thursday I watched Jeopardy Masters without, and this same day, Abbott didn’t have it. somehow, Dan Connor and his clan would not be stopped in their mission of bringing audio description to the world. The episode saw Jackie retire from the Lunchbox, leaving Harris in charge, and then realizing she doesn’t know what to do with herself. Also, Dan is asked to write an article about running a hardware store, which drives Ben insane. The audio description… honestly at this point I was just grateful it made it to Hulu since two other shows from the same night did not.

Fallout (Amazon) in the fifth episode saw Lucy meet up with Maximus, and the two are actually able to trust each other and survive. He gives her a good rundown of the history of what happened while she was in the vault, and she saves his life. speaking of the vault, there is definitely some sinister stuff happening down there. The desecrated vault gets cleaned too quickly, and talk of repopulating that vault happens.

The Tattooist Of Auschwitz (Peacock) finds its footing in the second episode. The jumping back and forth between timelines is lesss invasive, and used more to effect. Like in one scene, the older version of Lolly (Harvey Keitel) stops his story because he skipped over something that he initially didn’t want to mention because it was too difficult, so we go back, and it gives new context to the scene he was just describing. Jonah Hower King is doing some nice work here too.

Ghosts (Paramount Plus) wrapped its season technically, but I’m a week behind, where Pete discovers his ghost power is not being trapped on property. So, he travels with jay to the supermarket. honestly, this episode, while it had some good jokes, was so dumb. Like, why is he going with jay who can’t see him? Why wouldn’t he go with the one person who actually CAN see him, so that way if they needed to, he could communicate? Has she never been to the grocery store? Because she can see other ghosts not just in that house, so she’d be able to see the ghosts at the supermarket. I love this show, but this might be my least favorite episode because they forced so many dumb things in order to make it happen.

And because I hate myself, I watched the other holocaust drama, We Were The lucky ones (Hulu) the same day as the new peacock drama. This one shows the characters getting into new dangers, and there’s a really nail biting escape attempt at the end. i gotta hand it to a show whose first two episodes I thought were too slow, this has really turned around for me. And I don’t mind the narrator anymore. If I focus on it, maybe he sounds happier than the content. The narrator for The tattooist of Auschwitz definitely sounds like he’s narrating a program with weight. Here, it’s just a guy trying to do his best, and his natural pitch is a little higher than others. That’s it.

Good Times (Netflix) jumped into period drama. No, I don’t mean time periods. Honestly, why bother calling this show Good Times? It is just trying to be as raunchy as every other adult animated cartoon, and it’s not as clever as it thinks it is.

Them (Amazon) is back. I started the second season. season 1 rocked my world. it was disturbing as shit. Just, like, it still sticks with me. So I’m ready to be taken over by this, and the first episode is bone chilling, doesn’t disappoint, and this is a terrific anthology series. If you aren’t watching them, and you like anthology horror, you are doing yourself a disservice. This series is never afraid to ‘go there”. Season 1 had characters put a baby into a bag and shake it. Yes. It did. I do not know what lies ahead, but episode 1 gave me chills. The audio description here is fantastic. Superb.

The Rookie (Hulu) aired on Tuesday, so luckily the audio description made it to Hulu. This was a decent episode, if not a little break from the insanity of watching Tim go through the wringer the past couple of episodes. Nolan and Bailey still have choices to make. But, I like this show, and it always has goood audio description. It’s the one show that when ABC switched to Vi-Tech, somehow The Rookie felt the same.
