The Small Screen Diaries- 04/26/25

CBS has decided to not move forward with a second season of papa’s House, which makes some sense, as the show isn’t good. However, I would have recognized the talent potential, revamped the series, and found it some new writers and then tried to see if I could make a second season work. Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans jr SHOULD work as a series, and the fact that it doesn’t means the creatives on the show are failing.

TV Shows Watched: You: S5E1 (Netflix) with audio description, the Connor’s: S6E5 and S6E6 (Hulu) with audio description, Devil May cry: S1E5 (Netflix) with audio description, Will Trent: S3E15 (Hulu) with audio description, Happy face: S1E7 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, Wolf King: S1E8 (Netflix) with audio description, 1923: S2E5 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, celebrity Jeopardy: S3E13 (Hulu) with audio description, Your Friends And neighbors: S1E2 (Apple TV Plus) with audio description, and Elzabeth; S2E? (Paramount Plus) with audio description.

best Episode: Your Friends And Neighbors- Jon Hamm’s new show is solid. We’re getting an expansion of the supporting cast slowly with each episode, fleshing out those in close proximity. He’s still struggling with trying to maintain the idea that he has this life and expectations, all while having zero cash flow legally.

Runner Up: You- the show returned in typical fashion, and Joe seems to be in his happy place. No way does the series let him live. I have seen zero spoilers, but he’s not Dexter. he doesn’t just kill bad guys. His perception of reality is altered.

Worth Mentioning: happy Face, Elzabeth, and Celebrity Jeopardy- To round out the top 5. My favorite part of the Jeopardy finale was Ken talking like yoda, which inspired the others to mimic him, and then he forgot he was doing it and started to read another category like Yoda. Otherwise, my top 5 is fairly predictable.

best Performance: Ramon Rodriguez (Will Trent)- man. he has a scene at the end of the episode, where he uncomfortably relays the final moments of a son’s life to the mother of, and he’s just wrecked. this has been a rough season from a storytelling standpoint, but Rodriguez has never let me down. that scene was terrific.

runner Up: Jon Hamm (your Friends And neighbors)- I think he’s headed for an Emmy nomination. This role feels perfectly written just for him. The modern Don Draper, and he nails it.

runner Up: John Goodman (The Connors), Sara Gilbert (The Connors), Annaleigh Ashford (Happy face)- So Ashford has been Emmy-worthy all season, even if her show gets no other attention beyond her. She deserves to at least be in the mix. Watching the Connor’s finale, a few people stood out, but mostly Goodman and Gilbert, who were trapped in this bizarre finale, and clearly knew it was ending for real this time. no more opportunities for a reboot. Gilbert had a final scene as Darlene saying goodbye to her son, who leaves for a job in New York, and it is the most acting she’s probably ever done. She didn’t feel like she was just saying goodbye to Mark, but goodbye to everything. And Goodman always has these nice beats, and he also really brings home the finale. I almost tagged Katey Sagal as well, who deftly handled being the second wife in this whole court case thing, but the finale was really set up to support Dan saying goodbye. On another note, where the fuck was DJ and his entire family? Also, Becky has a daughter. Where did she go? Did you think that the world wouldn’t notice that only two of the three kids were in the finale for The Connor’s? Sure, DJ hasn’t been a series regular, but fucking Seth green was in the finale. They even joked about the audacity to include Harris’s new boyfriend, who has only been in one other episode… this season. the finale was stupid, but the actors did their best with it.

Best Audio Description: 1923- this western/action does have a way of fleshing out its scenes rather well. the location shifts, the tone changes, and the broad ensemble make it not the easiest show either.

Runner Up: Devil May cry- between demons and half-demons this show had a lot to prove. the audio description navigates the violence rather well.

Worth Mentioning: You, Your Friends And neighbors, Wolf King- I’d say these round out the top 5 for the day.

Best Moment Of Audio description: Caught In the Act (you)- there’s this excellent sequence where we see that joe is doing something, and it looks like he might be caught, but then… it was misdirection. The narration handled that whole thing really well. I tried to describe that in the least spoilery way possible, with also nodding enough to the scene so any writer/narrator or person who has already seen it knows what I’m talking about.

Runner Up: The Ass-Mobile (your Friends And Neighbors)- I mean, this is so much fun. there’s a car that Hamm has to drive, that is described in all its hilarious audacity, and his son refers to as “the Ass-Mobile”. Because of the rules of audio description, once something has a name… the series continues to refer to that vehicle as “the Ass-Mobile” as long as it is on screen, to which I say… thank you very much.

Worst Of- What a disappointing finale for The Connor’s. I was expecting an hour long finale, but it was really two episodes, that were barely related. The show has focused on a few new characters, even ones introduced this season, like Harris’s new boyfriend, and Seth Green as a potential love interest for Darlene, and they wasted time. Not to mention, Becky’s new boyfriend is also relatively new, having joined the cast last season. so, in the finale, we got characters who mean nothing saying goodbye, and characters who were on the show much longer just aren’t there. Seriously, where was DJ? Is Michael Fishman so fucking busy he couldn’t be bothered? With DJ not coming back, it meant the actress playing his daughter, who had significantly more screentime than he did in this reboot, also didn’t come back. Becky apparently doesn’t have a kid anymore. And instead of opting for a Seth Green cameo this season, wouldn’t it have made more sense to have Johnny Galecki stumble back through? I feel like, they were only given six episodes, but what was the point? even the choice to end the show with Dan only receiving 700 dollars from the drug company is so fucking weird. Like, it is a settlement, shouldn’t his lawyer have been made aware of the offer? He has to accept the offer, right? If it was so easy to just lowball everyone, all the companies would do it. Aside from the actors getting to say goodbye, at least the ones that mattered, and came back, this finale was terrible.n I have enjoyed The Connors, and for a revival that started as a ratings juggernaut, and really beat the odds in terms of being a successful revival (even without Roseanne), ABC really just took this one out back and shot it in the end.
