The Small Screen Diaries- 04/20/25

Posted on the 21 April 2025 by Sirmac2 @macthemovieguy

I hope you had the best 4/20 Easter ever. What a weird combination of dates.

TV Shows Watched: Number One Happy Family USA: S1E1 (Amazon) with audio description, Jurassic World: Chaos theory- S3E2 (Netflix) with audio description, Government Cheese: S1E2 (Apple plus) with audio description, 911: S8E11 (Hulu) with audio description, Happy Face: S1E6 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, Papa’s House: S1E17 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, Million Dollar Secret: S1E5 (Netflix) with audio description, The Residence: S1E7 (Netflix) with audio description, the Masked Singer: S13E10 (Hulu) no audio description, Celebrity Jeopardy: S3E? (Hulu) with audio description, Matlock: S1E? (Paramount Plus) with audio description.

Best Episode: Matlock- As X-Files fans would say, “The truth is out There”. Now that Olivia knows what is up with Maddie, what will she do with that information? Well, the episode played out perfectly, and set up the next episode in yet another interesting cliffhanger fashion. I don’t think I’ve had Matlock on top since its premiere.

Runner Up: the Residence- Also, really close to solving its mystery, we spent a lot of time with a new character, as well as talking about a plumber, and exploring every last possibility. whodunit? Who knows?

best Audio Description: Jurassic World: Chaos Theory- The animated adventure had plenty of moments to really make the most, including an attack while driving (a car with a push start in old Napoli? Where boy meets girl?), and the hunt for our newest addition to the family.

runner up: Number One Happy family USA- it has my favorite moment from the day, so it makes a solid choice for runner up. Also, thanks for responsible casting from Descriptive Video Works.

Best Performance: Kathy Bates (Matlock)- Yup. She’s gonna get that Emmy nomination. Clearly floored by all the new developments, Maddie has a short amount of time to convince Olivia that their friendship is real, and while she’s lying about some things, it is all for a good cause. Bates, an Oscar winner, of course nailed every thread in this fabric.

runner Up: James Wolk (Happy Face)- I haven’t gotten a chance yet to recognize Wolk in a thankless role, as a boring husband, but this episode gave him a lot to do. he had to face the reality that no one at work wanted to be associated with him, his daughter is clearly going through something, and his abject horror when he finds out what “that” is. He’s a solid actor, giving a solid performance, on an otherwise calm day full of animation and reality shows.

Best moment Of Audio description: Hot For Teacher (Number One Happy Family USA)- Regardless of how you feel about the pilot and whether it threaded an impossible needle, this scene was objectively hilarious, and the audio description did a great job of hitting the entire sequence. Points to Rami also for managing to hilariously tackle something from both ends, recognizing that teen boys fantasize about certain things, which in turn society also has determined is highly illegal. And, that wasn’t even the hardest sell of the entire pilot episode.

Runner Up: Going To Work (The Residence)- i actually really liked the explained monotony of how the character at the top spends so much time in terms of transportation just to get to their job, exploring what likely so many out there find extremely relatable. What an insane commute.

Worst Of…- Nothing really, but as someone who stopped watching Dr. Odyssey a long time ago, I’m not looking forward to the next episode of 911 that I have to watch.
