The Small Screen Diaries- 03/22/25

Looks like American Dad is exiting TBS, and headed back to FOX. What a strange journey. But, the show has managed to run for 19 seasons so far, so why stop it?

TV Shows Watched: The Residence: S1E1 (Netflix) with audio description, Yellowjackets: S3E6 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, Reacher: S3E5 (Amazon) with audio description, The Traitors: UK- S3E2 (Peacock) no audio description, Berlin ER: S1E4 (Apple Plus) with audio description, Love you to Death: S1E5 (Apple plus) with audio description, SNL: Shane Gilles (Peacock) with audio description.

Best Episode: Yellowjackets- Clearly, there’s a darkness that has followed all of these survivors because of the things they had to do. Of course, you can’t just eat people, and go back to a normal life. But, Shauna is trying to figure out who is specifically trying to kill her, and since there are some girls still alive in the past who don’t have present counterparts, I’m going to guess it is one of them. But, the ending to this episode was darkly hilarious. No spoilers. but, the audio description was so good in that moment.

Runner Up: The residence- Shonda Rhimes has a new show at Netflix, and Uzo Aduba is here to play an eccentric but brilliant detective, born to discover the truth behind a death in the White House. It certainly leans into the humor more than any other genre, so this is much more like a murder mystery version of Veep, than a serious recreation like The West Wing. The ensemble around her is really good, and the format, having people testifying in front of Congress, and then using flashbacks, is effective.

Best Audio description: Yellowjackets- Yes. From that final scene, to Natalie’s big moment with Ben, to even showing the specifics of what was going on with a cell phone, all really shaped the episode.

runner Up:- reacher- I have to give reacher the edge here, for the beginning sequence where the audience is worried about our DEA friends, to Reacher staging a car crash, and also getting clocked by a problem he hasn’t solved yet.

Best Performance: uzo Aduba (The Residence)- She’s perfect for this. she instantly made me want to see more of her in this character, and I think she can be hard to cast at times, or seemingly people don’t know how to cast her. this role is perfect for her, and she instantly brought me in as this quirky detective who is also an avid birder, and far smarter than anyone else in the room.

Runner Up: Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets)- Shauna is losing her damn mind. We’re starting to see her getting twisted around by some unknown person.

Best Moment Of Audio Description: Hello. (Yellowjackets)- So, this refers directly to the awkward ending of the episode, no spoilers, and really specifically where Ben is for the final moment. If you know, you know.

runner Up: the Set (SNL)- Holy cow. They found time to describe what the set looks like. Not just the individual sketches, but the basic set design they use for every monolog. Like, this is standard set design that I’m not sure has changed too much over the years, but if you’ve never actually seen it before, this might be the first (or second) time someone has actually mentioned it to you. i caught it, and I thought it was very well done.

Worst Of…- I mean, Peacock could hire a quality company to describe The Traitors: UK. or, if the show airs in the UK with audio description, just import the track? Is shit like this really this hard, or is it just a ton of apathy? i always assume it is apathy until these companies can convince me the monumental barriers that billion dollar corporations face when having to do something as basic as acquire previously made audio description.
