The Small Screen Diaries- 03/12/24

CBS came in clutch with two early, and easy, renewals. After previously picking up Tracker for next season, the network predictably confirmed that Ghosts and Fire Country would both be back for a 4th and 3rd season respectively. This is a no-brainer choice, since CBS has struggled to launch a new hit sitcom, and Ghosts is that for them, and Fire Country has a spinoff in contention for the fall.

My early predictions would be that CBS retains its entire FBi lineup, current NCIS programs, The Neighborhood, and Elzbeth. I think their bubble shows are So Help Me Todd and The Equalizer. I can see them keeping both, but with Matlock still waiting in the wings, and a spinoff to Fire Country, and two NCIS spinoffs, plus the Young Sheldon spinoff, next fall might look like nothing really changed. They are freeing up a few slots with the exits of Blue Bloods, SWAT, young Sheldon, and Bob Hearts Abishola. I think the biggest question mark is the CSI reboot, which had abysmal ratings in its first season when it had original cast on the show. How long is CBS going to try and keep that alive?

Of the things I watched yesterday, I have to mention that I am really enjoying The New look (Apple Plus) more and more. I really did not like the pilot episode, but this series has me now. The latest episode found Coco dealing with a tough family health crisis while also discovering her signature perfume might be getting made by someone in America. Meanwhile, Dior won’t sign a contract simply because he hasn’t given up hope on the return of his missing family and wants to be ready when she comes home.

Also, the second episode of The Gentleman (Netflix) has Ray Winstone, which is a solid casting get. The episode has this outlandish villain, The Gospel, and this show reminds me of how Guy used to direct back in the day. The audio description here is doing the best it can around the non-stop dialog.

Mr and Mrs Smith (Amazon) got weird as Jane moved in on John’s gig, and they tried to not get their third fail. These two are so unhappy together. I’m generally enjoying the show, and the Media Access Group has done some good work with the audio description. The fight scenes are well described.

I’m closer to finding out the truth of Death and other Details (Hulu), which I know technically ended for everyone else, but I’m down to just one more episode I believe. They finally take a look at the past and what went down with the investigation of that very first murder that brought Mandy Patinkin into her life. Mandy is excellent here, and deserves an Emmy nomination.

The third episode of In The Know (Peacock) made me laugh more than the first two. But, I’m still not a big fan. Considering Mike Judge is supposedly behind this, I want so much more from it. The audio description maybe could help sell the jokes more by describing the silly things even more? I’m not even sure that’s the problem, I’m just not sure this show is actually that funny.
