The Small Screen Diaries- 02/26/24

Let’s kick this day off with the big new debut. The Ones Who Live (AMC Plus), which AMC has finally added audio…. Oh wait. no. They haven’t. This show, like Daryl Dixon, Dead City, and the flagship show completely lacks audio description. Great. I wish the show I love loved me back. I’m stuck in an emotionally abusive relationship with The Walking Dead universe, ever since my vision loss. One of the biggest TV shows of all time, which has produced now SIX spinoffs, has no audio description. In Comparison, one of the biggest and longest running TV shows, NCIS, has audio description, has more seasons than The Walking Dead, but has only managed a meager four spinoffs (los Angeles, New Orleans, Hawaii, and Sydney). So, of course, my immediate grade is unwatchable, because it is a zombie drama, and at some point Rick cuts off his hand? When? Why? Just to catch up with the comics? Listen, if you are trying to align with the comics, Michonne needs to run the hell back to Alexandria/The Commonwealth, and find and leave with Ezekiel on the plot that never happened, and was kinda given to Carol, who died in the prison in the comics, and left her daughter to be raised by the group, except her daughter died in the show in Season 2… there’s no point in aligning with the comics anymore.

Basically. But, I do have questions and thoughts. When did we napalm Atlanta that Rick was there for? I remember the gang took refuge in Noah Emmerich’s building they needed to escape before it blew up at the end of Season 1. Are we saying that character was CRM? Where is Jadis? If no one can leave in this show, how did Jadis get to keep a walk-in talkie to call in a helicopter while maintaining a population of trash artists? Where is she? Why doesn’t Rick mention Carl ever in the first episode, or really anyone else? If the CRM has been around, why does it feel like something was added late stage, and I’m being gaslit? So the CRM has Jadis, and all Okafor knows about Rick is what he’s writing in those letters? Okafor should know the literal place where they are. Jadis was there. They picked Rick up in a helicopter not far from there. This cannot be this hard. I want more for this show.

I also want audio description. Yes, I watched some other shows that had audio description this week, like Sexy Beast (Paramount Plus), and finished the first season of My Life With The Walter Boys (Netflix), as well as older titles like Family Matters (MAX) and Mr Robot (Amazon) that had audio description, but I really just want to focus on how after all this time, The Walking Dead still dodges accessibility.
