The Small Screen Diaries- 02/19/25

TV Shows Watched: Prime Target: S1E6 (Apple Plus) with audio description, Muslim Matchmaker: S1E1 (Hulu) with audio description, The Golden Court: S1E1 (Netflix) with audio description, ghosts: S4E10 (Paramount Plus) no audio description?!??, The Hunting Party: S1E3 (Peacock) with audio description, and How Disney Built America: S1E1 (Hulu) no audio description. I also was going to watch SNL, but the audio description hasn’t made it there. I just listened to Paul Simon and Sabrina Carpenter, and then backed out for a later date when it does have audio description.

Best Episode: Ghosts (Paramount Plus)- I should have paid more attention to the ingredients in my stew yesterday, but while introducing some new shows, I also watched some shows I’m less than enthused over. Ghosts has been a favorite of mine, and even without audio description (seriously, WTF?), the episode still was the funniest thing. When they are trying to get Flower to realize she was in a cult, and her cult leader was lying to her, my favorite moment was Thor describing how the sun sets and followed it “sorry to get scientific” about a Norse God capturing the sun, and then taking a ride through the underworld… I guess until it rises again? Viking science.

Runner Up: Court Of gold- Of the non-fiction new entries, this was the best assembled product, though I did just watch a similar show, Starting Five, just a few months ago. And, that show featured many of these players. It is a docuseries about Team USA competing for basketball glory at the Paris Olympics, and how it gets harder every year, as other countries figure out how to play basketball.

Best Performance: The Ensemble Of Ghosts- Sure, the episode was Flower centric, but really all the Ghosts contribute with their little personality traits every time out. I hate that the Emmys have no cast prize, because I don’t think Emmy voters are ever going to single out just one, but this feels like a strong contender for an Ensemble prize. Like, how can you not?

Runner Up: The Ladies Of Muslim Matchmaker- I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, with this reality show, but at least the two ladies who are the core team (from what I can tell) feel ready for reality television. It was also a very weak day.

Best Audio Description: Prime Target- Without question. I can’t think of a standout moment, but only 4 of the 6 shows had audio description, and this one is the clear front runner. It has been mentioned for being solid before, in terms of action set pieces, but it was a no-contest victory.

Runner Up: court Of Gold- For what it is, it has solid audio description, but the format doesn’t allow for as much description. Also, as we move forward, I’m waiting to see how the actual basketball gameplay is written. Most of the first episode is giving you a structure of what the show is, and who the players are on the team. It doesn’t really describe anyone, as it assumes you just have a passing knowledge already of people like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Steph curry.

No moments were memorable. So, we’re skipping the next section.

Worst Of…- The worst individual thing I experienced was the actor who is playing Walt Disney in the reenactment sequences of How Disney Built America. Good lord. I thought Thomas Ian Nicholas was miscast, but this dude made me want to give him an Oscar. Paul Simon and Sabrina Carpenter is one of the weirdest combinations. I’m still not sure how I feel, but I’m pretty certain it wasn’t great. I feel like someone just handed me a peanut butter and jalapeño sandwich. i like those things separately. Together? the Hunting PArty is limping closer to the “remove from watchlist” territory. I just don’t find anything special in that show against a sea of procedurals. I know they try to rope in more mystery at the end, but I wasn’t even interested. I’d do at least one more episode of Muslim Matchmaker and Court Of Gold, and I’m committed to finishing Prime Target. I honestly forgot until the end of the day that the new Pixar show launched, and I should have watched that.
