The Small Screen Diaries- 02/03/25

Kicking off with news, I noticed in another news story that Apple Plus rescinded its second season order for The Completely Made up Adventures of Dick Turpin. This is a growing trend, which defeats the purpose of a renewal. Now, renewals mean nothing, and with limited series going on to have more seasons, like Nine Perfect Strangers later this year, there are no rules. There is another rule, and it is “if someone has been cancelled by Hollywood, burn all bridges as quickly as possible.” This could be attributed to people running as fast as they can from Carla Sofia Gazcon, who had some really unfortunate tweets on her account. But, now she doesn’t have an account, or a shot of winning. It is likely Emilia Perez’s Oscar chances overall are being affected by the continued drama surrounding that film. But, what I really meant was Netflix running from Neil Gaiman, who after existing for 64 years, has just recently had accusations of sexual misconduct thrown his way by several women. Naturally, Netflix was triggered, and announced that the upcoming second season of The Sandman would be its last. Good omens was already set to finish on Amazon, so Amazon didn’t need to change their plans. RIP Neil Gaiman.

TV Series Watched: the night Agent: S2E10 (Netflix) with audio description, Vietnam: The War That Changed America: S1E1 (Apple plus) with audio description, From: S1E5 (MGM Plus) with audio description, Wags To Riches: S1E3 (Netflix) with audio description, papa’s House: S1E8 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, Elzabeth: S2E? (Paramount Plus) with audio description, and Celebrity Jeopardy: S3E4 (Hulu) with audio description.

Best Episode:The Night Agent (Netflix)- I’ll hand it to the final two episodes, which turned around a season, and set up the next one rather well. Season 3 looks epic, and Netflix would be insane to cancel the show now.

runner Ups: From and Elzabeth- running right behind were two consistently terrific shows, that only suffered from not being the season finale. Another one bit the dust on From, and Elzabeth had to check herself into a wellness retreat to figure out a murderer.

Best Performance: Carrie Preston (Elzabeth)- she was fantastic this week, and because of recent developments with an old case, she’s not her usual self. She had a one-on-one conversation with another member of this wellness retreat that really seemed cathartic for her. She was able to say things to a stranger she couldn’t say to her friends.

Runner Up: Gabriel Basso (the Night Agent)- He can be bland at times, but he really showed up toward the end of the season, as the tension started to ratchet, and the stakes were raised. On his way out the door, I’ll give him the honorable mention.

best Audio Description- From- this show still has excellent audio description that really can’t be beaten by many shows. One of the consistently great tracks, and a show that leans heavily into a genre that allows for some terrific description.

Runner Up: Vietnam- The docuseries has some really nice, well done audio description for what it is. I’m always impressed when this format shows up with any depth in the description, and this show has it. the writing is solid, and the tone from the narrator is perfect. I love that it is a female, to contrast all the men who speak, especially Ethan Hawks who narrates.

best Moment of Audio description: Nathan (From)- The spoiler free version. if you know, you know.

Runner Up: Clear the Hotel (The Night Agent)- Pretty much from the time they enter the hotel, to the time they exit. I also could have labeled “clear the UN”, as that sequence was also well done. Clearing buildings.

Worst Of…?- I don’t really have a worst, though I wish Papa’s House, the series, had a different writers room. I wish the Wayans were writing their own material. The show isn’t as funny as the talent involved.
