A month has gone by. Damn. Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Disney plus) gave its best character description so far. When Percy tries to enter Hadestown, he must first pass by a fellow demigod. We were told he was tall, gaunt, and had wispy hair. For Percy Jackson, that’s like amazing audio description. We then meet two other characters with decidedly less description. Especially Hades, who just kinda appears. Hell, Cerberus got more description. Barely. Also, Poseidon shows up, and I was so totally underwhelmed with his entrance. This is some of the most lackluster audio description I’ve heard in a while.
Criminal Record (Apple Plus) continues on with above average levels of audio description, in a show that never surprises me, but continues to keep me engaged. It is so weird to have a show this predictable be this interesting. Colin From Accounts (Paramount Plus) saw a birthday party, a breakup, and maybe Colin isn’t who they think he is. This show has pretty good audio description as well, though it got off a little easy on introducing a bevy of new characters for the birthday party, and not giving them much description. We did get quite a lot about Gordon though, who rocked a pink jacket with a flamingo t-shirt.
And finally, True Detective: Night Country (MAX) has Tanzi Alexander describing all sorts of nonsense. My only question was toward the end, there is a scene between one of the lead cops, and a patient in bed. All things considered, with the supernatural elements in the show, I wouldn’t have used the term “lifts” from the bed, unless the patient was actually levitating. That scene, and how it plays out, in many ways could have done that, and it would have felt on brand. If you want to use lifts, maybe limit it to which part of the body is lifting. “Lifts his head”, or whatever.
