The Small Screen Diaries- 01/17/25

Yesterday, I reviewed the first film of 2025 (for me), in what I’m calling my first Quality Check. It is essentially a stream of consciousness watch. I knew very little going in, nothing about who did the AD, or the general plot of the film. Hopefully, it is somehow helpful, as I frequently don’t get the opportunity to go that much into detail as reviews typically lean toward “was it good?” But if you see Quality Check in front of a review now, it means that review leans more toward was the description effective or good?

TV Shows Watched: Silo: S1E10 (Apple plus) with audio description, Goosebumps: S1E6 (Disney Plus) with audio description, Dexter: original Sin: S1E? (Paramount Plus), The Pit: S1E3 (MAX) with audio description, Shifting Gears: S1E2 (Hulu) with audio description, Are You Smarter Than A celebrity?: S1E? (Amazon) with audio description, and and celebrity Jeopardy: S3E2 (Hulu) with audio description.

YouTube: Deep Focus Lens: (Top 10 Films) and the Awards Contender (Top 10 Films)

Podcasts: The Dark Room (Their Top 10 Films)- I got a shoutout! I’m mentioned! I’m famous now!

Movies: Back In Action (Netflix) with audio description, A Different Man (MAX) with audio description

Best Episode: Silo- In a walk. Like, this season finale was so epic, nothing came close. I’m not even doing a runner up. That would indicate something was close to the godliness of this episode, and this was perfection. I loved how it finished the season, and also opened up a huge set of new questions. Two more seasons!

Best Performance: Rebecca Ferguson (Silo)- All season long, other people have stolen her thunder. She stole that shit back in the season finale. Her speech to the teens was excellent, and her final moments with Bernard were quite literally on fire.

Runner Up: Jackie Tohn (Celebrity Jeopardy)- Most people don’t know Jackie. Those who do, likely don’t know that she’s actually an American Idol alumni. She was a semi-finalist way back in the day (Top 24, but not Top 12). So, she made the voting rounds. She’s had a slowly building film career, including a Uwe Boll movie, and just beat Neil Degrasse Tyson at Jeopardy. Work it. Talk about a surprise. American Idol needs to take ownership of her next season and remind people where she once was. She’s come a long way, and is excellent in Nobody Wants this.

Best Audio Description: Goosebumps- Silo does lose here, because Goosebumps is on another level. The opportunity for description is so grand here, and the team is meeting and rising to the task. Love it.

runner Up: Shifting Gears- I’m loving Dave Wallace on this, and I want to keep putting this forward so ABC gets a hint of what their audio description could be if they used a different company.

Best Moment Of Audio Description: Goosebumps- I don’t know how to say it without spoiling it. I shall try. The person holding the camera ends up in a different room. Her time down there is the win.

Runner Up: Silo- Not necessarily well written, but so important as a visual cue. What is in the paper bag. My mouth dropped. I wasn’t expecting it, and there’s no dialog to support it, but it is so important and ties into the mystery of Silo.

Worst of… Anything?: I’m shocked that an astrophysicist just lost Jeopardy. he even lost a question where the answer was a moon of Saturn. So, Neil Degrasse Tyson wins for his performance on Jeopardy. I thought it was unfair for him to be there, but he’s shockingly bad at Jeopardy for someone of his supposed intelligence. And, he did get some pop culture questions right, so he’s not totally at a loss there, that’s not why he lost. he lost because he’s bad at trivia. He lost to an actress who was once in a Uwe Boll movie. Truth.
