The Small Screen Diaries: 01/15/24

The Emmys were last night, and Succession predictably did well, while Better Call Saul finished its run with not a single win for anything ever. I’m most excited for Paul Walter Houser who won Supporting Actor in a Limited for Blackbird, which was on Apple Plus in July 2022. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should. He’s fantastic. And now, the shows I actually did watch.

My Life With The Walter Boys (Netflix) has some audio description that has grown on me. Of course, four episodes in and I have a bit more of a grasp on this show in general. Maybe it’s that. In general, this show has an insane amount of characters to keep track of. I could say the same about A Murder At The End of The World (Hulu), which is trying so hard to do the “anyone is a suspect thing”, but I still from day one have believed it to be Clive Owen, and I think I’m about to be right. This was the episode that resolved what we saw in the pilot with the gunshot.

Billions (Paramount Plus), in the 3rd to last episode, set up the true return of Bobby Axelrod who Prince thought poking at would work in his favor. But, Bobby ended up with a nice win, and it’s so weird to see the original cast all working together now. I’m not entirely unconvinced Ryan won’t play a part in the Prince takedown. Even though she took a partner spot, she did it after almost quitting, and I think she’s smarter than anyone is giving her credit for.

My favorite line of the day is “No one should ever worry about Michael Wagner.” Oh, Wags, you need your own spinoff.

I actually had to finish The Santa Clauses (Disney Plus) as somehow I left an episode hanging and just now noticed. Now, that series is behind me. Thank god. The audio description team did fine work, but we don’t need the further adventures in this world anymore. The worst part is, if they renew it, I will somehow still feel compelled to watch something I’m not a fan of out of some nostalgic unbreakable bond I have with this series.

Gaby revealed her secret to someone in the most recent episode of Found (Peacock), which they literally held for after the holidays just to run 2 episodes. Really? Next episode is the season finale.

I did watch the episode of The Crown (Netflix) where William meets Kate, and Harry is already being portrayed as the ne’er do well. Somehow, Imelda Staunton is getting a lot of love on this season, and she’s rarely featured. Thus far, The Queen is almost a supporting character in her own show. And, despite its cancellation, I’m finishing Julia (MAX), which saw David Hyde Pierce play his twin, and Julia dropped a bombshell about endorsements. She also gave a lot of credit where it wasn’t due, and took the high road. Sarah Lancashire, I’ll miss you most of all.
